RPG Bristol McCoy

John McCoy 1 April 2005 04:13:50
OK, no wimpy "top 5" or "top 10" guesses this week, we're going for
absolutes. We're also going for a perfect -5 score, but that's
beside the point.

1 - Biffle wins.

2 - Kurt Busch 2nd.

3 - Johnson DNF.

4 - Harvick highest finishing Chevy.

5 - McMurray highest finishing Dodge.

Bonus - Mark Martin is hit 3 or 4 times by the same guy, eventually
wrecks, looses his temper & throws his helmet at the wrecker.
NASCAR claims they didn't see it despite TV evidence, and does not
issue a fine/penalty.

I think that's a 10 pointer at least. Really... when's the last time you saw
Mark Martin throw something?

Let's not haggle about a few points among friends. Make it 25.

MM has said a few harsh words about drivers. That's about it,
as far as I can recall.

Maybe that's what the bonus should be... you put something out there, people
vote on a point value, and you get the average if it comes true.

I like that idea... and I vote for 25 on that one too.

Then you're gonna LOVE mine (which I sent before I read about the Bonus vote!)

Bonus. The rain forecasted for Schulykill Haven will instead be diverted to
Bristol where the race will be run on rain tires and an even numbered car will
win. (and the Cub Scouts will have great weather.) Mikey will support nascar
in their decision to run on rain tires in the rain but, as an odd numbered car,
he will not win.

Well since I think you have a better chance of changing the weather than
getting NASCAR to race in the rain... I think this is a high points bonus.
If we are going to do this, I think we should have a minimum and maximum
value on what we can select... like 100 points is the highest, 5 points the
lowest.... in that case I'd put this one at about a 95.

Easy there fella -- the entire season is only worth about 180 points if you
get a perfect 5 every week.. So, normal maximum gain/loss is 5 points. I
set the bonus for double that. I'm not that interested in giving out 95
points for *anything*, no matter how amazing.

OK, Bristol night race time - I'd be just as happy if this was
the only night race...

The win: Jeff Burton

1 - Matt Kenseth T5, Jimmy Johnson outside T10

2 - Kurt Busch T5 and best finishing Dodge

3 - Greg Biffle T10

4 - Elliott Sadler T10 and the booth spends more time talking about
baloney burgers than it does the Evernham soap opera

5 - Gilliland finishes ahead of the last guy to skip ROTY, Edwards.

bonus - someone wrecks & heads right for the garage, running
into the pace car coming out onto pit lane in the process.

3 - Dave Blaney and Scott Riggs both finish ahead of Dale Jarrett.
Jarrett's position vis-a-vis the T35 in points gets precarious.

Good luck on grading the "precarious" part of your compound
prediction. ;o)

5 - JPM hits another car on pit road, or is hit by another car
on pit road. For the purposes of this RPG, we'll include the
apron of T3-4 as part of pit road. It's a tight pit road, there's
going to be a mess of pit stops, and somewhere along the way
communications between JPM, the spotter, and the crew chief are
going to have a breakdown.

Wonder how he'll do with the bumpin' and bangin'. He could
get taken out early in the race. How friendly are the
drivers toward him?

Quals rained out, and the non-T35 cars obviously practiced
on qualifying setups, so this is going to be another hard
one to predict...

The Win: Kevin Harvick. It's about time for a Chevy to
prevail, the usual suspects didn't practice well, and Harvick's
got a decent record here.

1) Best Toyota: Blaney. He edged out Busch in practice
(ignoring, for the moment, Reutimann since he was obviously
on a qualifying setup), he'll avoid mishaps that the other
Toyota guys don't to post a good finish.

2) Best Ford: Kenseth. None of them seem to have shown
much in practice, so the safe bet to show up at the front at
the end of the race is Kenseth.

3) Best Dodge: Kurt Busch. He didn't show much in practice
either, but he's pretty much a master of Bristol.

4) Best Rookie: Hornish. Bit of a surprise there, but he
was much better than the others in practice; I will guess
he'll manage to stay out of too much trouble and finish
best of the rookies, albeit 2 or more laps down.

5) (I've run out of bests...) Kyle Petty practiced nearly
5 hundreths faster than Bobby Labonte, putting him 7 spots
higher on the list. They finish in the reverse order, with
Petty 7 or more spots worse than Labonte.

The Win: Kevin Harvick. Haven't seen all that much of him in
recent weeks, but he runs this track well, and seemed to have
a pretty fast car in quals.

1 - top Toyota: with the season he's had, it'd be hard to pick
anyone other than Kyle Busch, so I'll pick Kyle for top Toyota
finisher.

2 - top Ford: the Ford guys, other than Beall, didn't really
shine in quals. I'll pick Greg Biffle to be top Ford.

3 - top Dodge: this has been a rough year for Penske (Daytona
excepted), but this has been a very good track both for the team
and for Kurt Busch. So I'll take Kurt for the best finishing
Dodge.

4 - top Rookie: Aric Almirola is in the #8 this week, and
without meaning any disrespect to the other rookies, he's shown
a lot more skill in his prior races than they. So I will pick
Almirola to be the best rookie.

5 - story: I was gonna take a jab at Michael "slow as mud"
Waltrip here, but that would be mean (altho I would not be
surprised to see him & Allmendinger switch spots in the points).
Instead I will predict that experience will count for something,
and Kyle Petty will stay out of trouble and finish T20 in what
may well be his last Bristol race.
