Is Indy the only race that has a limit on the number of entrants?

F1: Eleven 2-car team limit (22 cars)
NASCAR: 43 cars

Everything else, I don't know...

Many road courses have only so many pit boxes and in the heyday of cart
there used to be bumping so to speak. For example at long beach one year I
remember Hiro and one other car failed to qualify as there were only 26
spaces available, IIRC.

Most short track events have a limit on the feature. Usually in the
range of 20 to 26 cars. They'll also have limits on the number of
cars in a heat or consi, and run more of those if there are too many
cars.

The IRL probably has a rule specifying how many cars on different size
tracks.

F1 has 22 starters these days because there are only 11 teams. When
they had more than 12 teams (I think that was the break point) they
used to have various qualifying procedures to eliminate the extras.
There was a time when F1 at Monaco was limited to 16 cars because the
track was so tight.

Actually, the regulated limit is twelve 2-car teams (24 cars). The
twelfth team spot was supposed to be occupied by Prodrive, but they
bailed before the season started.

Forgot about that... and now with Super "Friends" gone, wasn't Bernie
saying that he feels ten teams is more than enough (which just means one
less "mouth" to feed from the F1 coffers...).

33 is just a number...just ask TG...

Yeah...when Lynn comes a knockin', the number can be changed.

As for NASCAR..43 is down right crazy at places like Bristol.

Is that a short track? I seem to recall some NASCAR races where the
overhead shot appeared to show the line of cars taking up more than half
the track.

Yes it is. Just over a half mile in length.

And every once in awhile there's talk about putting a dome on it.
