Don't know how many of you, if any may have heard of Raceway Woods.
Raceway Woods is the former site of Meadowdale International Speedway, in Carpentersville, Il.
Meadowdale was a roadcourse, short track, and drag strip all in one, and the property was saved by the city and is now a part of the park district. Many Nascar Grand national legends had raced here in the past, including Tiny Lund, Roger Penske, and Fireball Roberts.
If anyone comes close to Carpentersville I incourage you to spend a few hours here, if this kind of racing history interests you. There are still remains that can be found along the track, including bridges, tunnel, and the old Pure Oil Silo. (which was just saved from distruction)
This area is a on-going effort by volenteers to clean up and restore the history of the track. And as a added bonus, if you enjoy Geocaching (treasure hunting with GPS), there are plenty caches there, and can be found at geocaching.com...
For those who need "proof" of this historic area, the following is a link to the web site;
Isn't that the track that had the old "Monza" Wall?

Yeppers...and that's a great site with an amazing gallery of photos.
Worth spending some time on them, Carey.

As the weather gets warmer, I encourage all to visit this track and the
website. IMO, its a must-see for any race fan.
NOTE: On really warm sunny days, there is not much protection from the
heat, so bring plenty of water.

Yes. Ofcourse, the old wooden wall is gone, as is the asphalt wall that replaced it. Infact, most of the banking was also "flattened" shortly before it closed.

The current photos of the track on the site are good to give you an idea of what it looks like today, but you have to visit it to see the smaller details left behind.
The History takes some time to read, but it makes it very clear on why the track was eventually closed after a short life.
