Couldn't Montoya come back to Williams?
Barrichello: He is just not good enough to win the wdc.>
With the F2002/F2004 and withou MSchumacher, he would have won two titles.

In 40 years no driver that won the F3000 championship won the F1 >championship

I presume your including Formula 2 as F3000 championships?
(Dont' know if an F2 champion [WAs there even one] ever won the F1
championship)

Yes he was. European F2 Championship 1967-84, F3000 1985-2004.

No European F2 Champion ever went on to win the F1 title.

1967 Jacky Ickx 8 F1 wins, runner-up 1969 & 1970

1968 Jean-Pierre Beltoise 1 win

1969 Johnny Servoz-Gavin

1970 Clay Regazzoni 5 wins, runner-up 1974

1971 Ronnie Peterson 10 wins, runner-up 1971 & 78

1972 Mike Hailwood

1973 Jean-Pierre Jarier

1974 Patrick Depailler 2 wins

1975 Jacques Laffite 6 wins

1976 Jean-Pierre Jabouille 2 wins

1977 René Arnoux 7 wins

1978 Bruno Giacomelli

1979 Marc Surer

1980 Brian Henton

1981 Geoff Lees

1982 Corrado Fabi

1983 Jonathan Palmer

1984 Mike Thackwell

Between 1967-78 F1 drivers were able to compete in F2 (known as graded drivers),
but were unable to score points. Note that Ronnie Peterson was runner-up in F1
in the same season that he was F2 champion.

1985 Christian Danner

1986 Ivan Capelli

1987 Stefano Modena

1988 Roberto Moreno

1989 Jean Alesi 1 win

1990 Erik Comas

1991 Christian Fittipaldi

1992 Luca Badoer

1993 Olivier Panis 1 win

1994 Jean-Christophe Boullion

1995 Vincenzo Sospiri

1996 Jörg Müller

1997 Ricardo Zonta

1998 Juan Pablo Montoya 4 wins

1999 Nick Heidfeld

2000 Bruno Junqueira

2001 Justin Wilson

2002 Sebastian Bourdais

2003 Bjorn Wirdheim

2004 Vitantonio Liuzzi

Agree, but he's no Mika, unfortunately. He may win a few, but> he won't have done it against another drive of Mika or MS's> caliber when the opposition was at their prime.

No, no, he only has to beat Alonso who with Kimi is already better than
Schumacher. Hakkinen pfft it took him 4 years to win 1 race, he just proved
in 98.99 how overrated Schumacher is.

He won one race in 1967, but wasn't eligible to score points. There was no
established F2 championship before that year.

My memory must be playing tricks on me...coulda sworn Black Jack and the
Bear dominated the F2 Championship in the 1-litre Brabham-Hondas....or
did they just win a lot of individual races?

I believe that was in 1966 - they won all six races that made up the Trophees de
France F2 Championship. There were various other F2 races in 1966, but it wasn't
until 1967 that a "proper" championship was created.

Yes, it was, the needle-roller-bearing screamer Hondas in the Brabhams
relegated all Cosworth products to 2nd division. Went to a couple of
those races.

Ahah! It would have been the French series that I remembered as a proper
European championship. Lovely cars, but too close in concept to the
1-litre F3s of the time, The 1600s from 1967 were much better....even
though one of them killed wee Jimmy.
