Monaco GP, predictable

Dariusz 23 May 2005 02:16:18
Well, no suprise with the race, apart from a few incidents, it's as per
usual a procession race... why do we have Monaco as a "circuit"?

We had Michael Schumacher push some real fast laps, faster than even race
winner Kimi, and as soon as Michael catches backmarkers, that's the end of
that. One big procession for about eight cars.

Alonson sould be DQ'ed from the race for running no measurable grooves on
his rear tyres.

Get rid of the Monaco GP.

Well, why don't you try watching the race next year? The one thing this
wasn't was the expected boring procession. The TV director obviously
couldn't cope, but with Trulli fighting past Fisi and the Williams cars
finding a way past Alonso, not to mention a fair bit more dicing
elsewhere in the pack, we got a lot more excitement than I was
expecting.

Oh, right, now I see what's upset you. Your vineyard's a bit vinegary.

Um, dude, there was more passing there than at Spain, by a long
way. Imola too. What race were you watching?

The pass from Trulli on Fisi over the sidewalk was awesome, just a
shame he broke his car. The followup by the others in the queue
(especially Barrichello) was also quite something to see.

Michael /was/ the backmarker: those bridgestones take about 20 laps
to get up to temperature. If taking DC out of the race hadn't fucked his
nose, he might have done better on fuel strategy.
Who knows, the Ferrari was certainly fast once the tyres got in
shape. It was an *awesome* last lap from Schumi too, got Rubins very
nicely, and very nearly got his brother on the line.

It's only considered poor form if you gain an advantage from it.
With them being restricted to one rubber type through the tyre (IIRC),
there's no way they can make a tyre good with grooves and without; too
much heat difference.
Get rid of the Monaco GP.

Imola first, then Nurburgring. Monaco looked a little better this
year too, with a few corners smoothed out, and a couple more runoff
areas built in, and even the chance to bump over the sidewalk here and
there.

F1 does need a variety of tracks, IMO. Cutting out the last really
tight, bumpy, narrow, and dead slow track would be a shame. At least it
usually throws up a strange result or two (like both '05 Williams on the
podium!).

Did you actually watch the race? Do you have any idea what you are
watching? Do you know anything at all about motorsport...?

No, but there has been countless processions at Monaco compared to other
circuits.

Yes. But this year was not one of them.

Monaco's charm is, that the cars get bunched up close behind each
other and this provides the impression of close exciting racing.

Unlike the usual show of having all cars spaced out by at least a
couple of seconds by the first pit stops. On normal circuits with
proper passing areas, a faster car will generally catch the slower one
and be done with it in a lap or so, then we, again, wait for 10
minutes until another such passing occasion comes along. We've had
more than our usual share of good fights this year, but wheel to wheel
racing is still a rare sight on normal tracks.
