F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone claims that he stepped in and prevented Jenson Button, and the BAR team, from being thrown out of this year's World Championship, following the fuel tank fiasco.
"Max took a hard line on BAR and wanted them thrown out of the entire championship", said the Englishman, according to The Sun " I told him to come back from that a bit because I was worried Honda might leave the sport. I asked him not to go for an entire season's ban because it would also not have been good for the sport."
Prior to the International Court of Appeal hearing, Ecclestone had said that he believed BAR to be guilty and that if this were to be the case the Brackley team should have the book thrown at it, which presumably would have meant throwing the team out of the championship.
Bearing in mind or despite the source (the Sun), assuming it is an accurate this could be seen as casting doubt on the independence of the ICA. Didn't the FIA officially ask for BAR to be thrown out? If so either Bernie had no influence whatsoever on this case and is lying or had influence behind the scenes after the case had been put before the court. I am not aware of any official record of the FIA climbing down on it's desired penalty.

I had exactly the same thoughts.
This month's F1 Racing reports that they conducted a straw poll in the paddock at Barcelona, they asked 100 people if the ICA was independent of the FIA. 94 people said no - they included some FIA people in the survey - all of whom said yes.

Ditto. It's a very strange thing to say because of the obvious implications.
(It's also reported on AA, so I assume it's a pretty safe quote)

From the FIA website, their case before the ICA:
"The FIA (Sport) asks the court to exclude the Lucky Strike BAR Honda team from the 2005 Formula One World Championship and to fine the team at least one million Euros."
I emailed ITV asking them to ask Bernie to clarify his remarks... much good may it do me
There is NO racing allowed. F1 is F1xed from start to finish. It is a show - an emtertainment with actors and a director. If they were atall serious about impartiality, they would have from the start had a clearly independent governing body.
Thing is NOT to take it seriously. These companies knew the fixed nature before they began in F1 and invested gazillions of spondulicks. So, the only surprised ones are some of the public who simply watch the red cars go round and finish first. But that got a bit boring for the public so now there's a tussle for whoich colour of cars will go round and round and finish first. I think Honda disobeyed the script by showing signs of finishing first. But hey that's not what the director wants. So kick them out! They went against my script! But the boss said no. They might spill the beans, so just kcik them in the balls for now - they'll soon get in line. The director, not wishing to upset the boss, did, begrudgingly, as he was told. Honda ate humble pie and so F1 goes on.
