Any way of comparing Alonso's early career with Michael's? I was surprised to hear that Alonso already has as many victories (12) as Mario Andretti, and IIRC only one fewer than DC. And of course he's already WDC.

Yup, I can do that. The following list is all drivers who have taken part in at least one F1 Championship GP (includes Indy 500 races from 1950 to 1960) and have won at least 1 of the GPs. It is their results up to their 75th start (less if they did less than 75 races). Some sites will claim FA at 76 starts but I do not include Indy last year as a start.
(Act = active drivers, Pods = podiums and FLap = fastest laps)
If you want to compare all drivers[1] or all active drivers then you'll have to wait a while 'cos the missus and I are off into town to buy a car.
Cheers
Geoff
[1] A rather large list but I can restrict it to only drivers who have won, been on the podium, got pole or front row or had a fastest lap. That will reduce the list somewhat.

Alonso i favoured by the dynamics of F1 nowadays. Since the 90's and the death of Senna, it looks like we always have one champion combination driver/car, and the interesting thing is to watch if the other can catch up. We had the Schumacher/Benneton, Williams, Hakkinen/McLaren, Schumacher/Ferrari and now Alonso/Renault. No more battle of three drivers in the last race.
Now Alonso depends on the expected revival of McLaren, and extend it as far as Schumacher did with Ferrari. He could get the non-achievable-by-Schumacher record of rate of wins... -- Thor -- Mieres del Camino -- EspaГ±a
Says something for three car teams really. There was seven McLaren> and three Williams DWC's in the decade before Bennetton too, though> Prost was robbed in '90 for Ferrari.>
Yes. But during that time we had 4 driveres seriously fighting for winning, and some year with the same engine! This last (15?) years F1 is like a boxing match; we already have a winner and the show comes from the aspirant to catch up.
We had Schumacher/Ferrari, Räikkönen/McLaren, and Montoya/Williams> until the second last race in '03, where Montoya was forced to do a>
Yep, we had the luxury of two 'aspirant's that year, but once the Ferrari started winning again after mid-season.. it was over...
