Reasons to be cheerful Duncan Snowden 22:10:06
 - We've just had a fantastic race.

- It was won at a bloody canter by a kid in a Minardi.

- Yes it was.

- Oh, all right; it's owned by a couple of Austrians now.

- One of them is Gerhard Berger.

- Despite that, they played the Italian national anthem. (Wonder what
the "senior" Red Bull team will get - I'm betting Austria.)

- Forza Minardi!

GEM/BDR Merger denied? Mike Simmons 18:11:18
Jayski is reporting that a honcho with Dodge Motorsports is denying the
rumor that GEM and BDR will merge. He further states that GEM, PEI, Ganassi
and Penske are firmly in the Dodge camp. He goes on to say that despite
persistent rumors, Dodge is firmly committed to a "long-term" NASCAR
presence in Cup. I hope he is right!

Newsgroup ? Mike Simmons 16:00:44
I have had a problem this year with messages showing up under previous
headers.

For example, in Sept '07 McCoy posted his NH RPG with the subject line of
"McCoy - RPG - NH", and in '07 it showed up as a current post. Now, in Sept
'08 he posts his RPG using the same subject line, but, rather than show it
as a "new" post, my Outlook newsreader "attaches" it as a continuation of
the '07 thread. This forces me to scroll back a whole year to find the
current post. Since I discovered the problem, I have been appending my
posts with an '08 to distinguish them from last years posts but many of us
use the same subject line from race to race.

If I have explained the problem clearly, can anyone suggest a fix?

My Chase Prediction Mike Simmons 14:49:51
I've looked at the field and consulted the crystal all week and now am ready
to stick my neck out with a Chase RPG.

The final five (in no order) will be.....

Busch
Edwards
Johnson
Earnhardt
Burton

and the winner will be..... Johnson for a three-peat.

Yeah, I know that the "smart money" is on KyBu, but I don't think he has the
maturity and patience to rein in his emotions for 10 races. Edwards has
been hot as of late, but he has had some luck issues that may come to plague
him during the Chase. Earnhardt has been nothing if not consistent but
hasn't shown a winning effort and I feel that a win will be a requirement to
capture the Chase. Burton is a classic case of tortoise and hare, slow and
steady got him into the Chase but ala Earnhardt, it will take a win. Absent
bad luck from the other drivers, I don't see this happening. Which leaves
Johnson. Jimmie has shown the maturity and patience to win races even when
circumstances are against him. Chad Knaus will be there for him with good
cars and a good race strategy. Jimmie knows how to win.

At least that's how I see it.... your thoughts?

Renault's suicides Rui Pedro Mendes Salgueiro 08:40:09
Some weeks ago it was reported that a Renault F1 engineer commited suicide
at his place of work (not actually on the building but on its grounds).
At the time I found that a bit peculiar (without checking any statistics,
I think it is more usual for suicides to be at home or in isolated places
than at places of work) but I didn't think much about it.

Today I read in a magazine that there have been other suicides (at
Renault, not only at the F1 department). They mentioned that 6 persons
have killed themselves and 2 others have made failed attempts (mostly at
the design department, I think).

Several of the cases were at the place of work and at least one engineer
left a suicide note addressed to Renault's CEO, Carlos Ghosn, blaming the
pressure in which he is making the engineers work.

French authorities are now investigating if work conditions were a factor
in those suicides:

Ganassi/Waltrip Merger? Mike Simmons 06:11:04
Jayski is reporting rumors about a possible Ganassi/Waltrip merger which
would expand the combined teams to four cars and have JPM driving a Toy next
year.

At this juncture, I cannot see any benefit to either team from this combo.
Both Ganassi and Waltrip are weak. Ganassi lost Sorenson and is effectively
down to one driver, Montoya. Both are having sponsorship issues with
Waltrip the only one with a committed full-season sponsor. The only way
this makes sense is IF Dodge notified Ganassi that manufacturer fundage will
be down next year and Ganassi is tempted to jump aboard the Toy bandwagon
for $$. Even so, the Toy's supposed HP advantage will be nil unless
Ganassi/Waltrip can work out the other issues that keep them at mid-pack or
worse.

It just seems to me that two weak teams are combining efforts to survive,
but neither team brings any strength to the merger.

Your thoughts?

Mike

Re: Warning: Spa spoiler Mark Jackson 02:40:05
 Duncan Snowden wrote:
... literally:
"In a controversial move, Lewis Hamilton has been handed a 25s penalty
following today's Belgian GP, thereby handing the victory, and further
precious championship points to title rival Felipe Massa"
So cutting a chicane in the wet on slicks then yielding position is more
serious than pulling out into the path of another car? Wasn't Ferrari's
excuse at Valencia that Massa backed off, and nobody was hurt? If Kimi
didn't cross the line clearly ahead of Hamilton my eyesight's worse than
I thought.
So no bias there, then.

Let me choose my words carefully here.

I've watched the tape several times and I find it very hard to argue
that Hamilton gained *no* advantage by cutting the chicane. Had the
Ferrari magically vanished I think Hamilton would have been able to take
the second half of the chicane without leaving the racing surface, but
he had already lost speed (Raikkonen had pulled a half car-length ahead)
and would have lost more as he exited on a too-tight line (dictated by
the speed at which he had arrived at the first half of the chicane). As
a result of the cut he came onto the start-finish straight at a higher
speed and in better shape than he otherwise would.

Hamilton then backed off to let Raikkonen repass, but in such manner as
to maintain as much speed as possible. (He lifted a little and let
Raikkonen past over several seconds - by contrast with other incidents I
remember, where the cutter visibly slowed to permit an immediate
repass.) Raikkonen was only a half car-length or so ahead by the
start-finish line, and Hamilton only fell a full car-length back once
they began to brake for the hairpin. I think it's unlikely he could
have been in that position had he been able to take the second half of
the chicane without cutting.

So I have to accept that Hamilton gained *some* advantage. Was it
enough to enable his pass at the hairpin? Hard to say, and I'm not sure
the "advantage" interpretation requires that anyway.

However, I can't think of a previous incident in which a driver was
penalized after ceding a position gained by cutting a corner on the
grounds that he didn't cede *enough*. That doesn't make the current
ruling wrong, but it puts it back into the ongoing credibility problem
most folks have with the FIA and its stewards: no grey-area rulings
(calls on infractions for which there is no previous unarguable
precedent) go against Ferrari, including those that appear to many to
have been rationalized into a grey area to begin with!

Since the FIA's position is that they don't *have* a credibility
problem, and it's not hard to construct an argument for the stewards'
ruling that has at least a shred of justification, I fear that prospects
for the McLaren appeal are not good.

Qualifying was rained out, but they did get to practice, so it is not
a total loss. Still it's a heck of a note to start the Chase with.

it looked early on like I might have accidentally picked the winner,
but then Jr. lost the handle for a while and never fully recovered.
Lets see how badly I actually did.
Winner: Dale Earnhardt Jr. His practice speeds weren't much, but he
is starting in the front and will have time to get things sorted out
before the checkers fly.

+0 Congrats to the Biff.
1. No more than 5 chasers in the top 12.

+0 I count 9.
2. JPM will score a top 10. His practice times are real good......
+0 He hung out near or in the top 10 most of the day, but finished up
in 17th.

3. Bobby Labonte will card a top 5.

+0 13th. Better than usual, but not where I needed him to be.

4. David Reutimann scored a top 15.

+1 YES!! A point!! Finished in 15th.
5. Sam Hornish Jr. is the top finishing rookie.

+0 That would be Regan Smith in 23.

Segment one total - +14
Segment two total - +11
Race total - +1
Chase points - +1

Simmons - RPG - NH II - 2/2 Mike Simmons 05:57:32

Having bitched long enough about my dislike for winter, I will now offer my
top five for NH.

In no order...

Hamlin - 0
Johnson - 1
Biffle - 1
Stewart - 0
Bowyer - 0

and the winner.... Jimmie Johnson of course!

Jimmie didn't have nuffin for Biffle at the end. Glad to see the Biffster
get a win.

A dark horse could be Burton. Slow and steady wins the race and he has done
well at NH.

He wuz strong today, just not strong enough.

My guess for top rookie will be Carpentier.

When yer wrong yer wrong...

Well, I was right about Bowyer's result. Some MVM points, maybe?

You bet. You sure need them after some of the LOSER picks
you made. :-O

2 - top Ford: I go with Greg Biffle almost every week, and most
weeks he disappoints. But since it appears all the rest of the
Fords took the week off, I'll go with Biffle again.

Yay! I like the Biff. He's not so bad on some of the upcoming
tracks, too...a dark horse for the championship? +1

Very. He's something of a throwback. An old young gun.
Not too photogenic, but comes across as a real nice guy.
Something like Dale Jarrett.

3 - top Dodge: well, we know Labonte isn't likely to stay up there,
and we know Newman & team have pretty much given up on the season,
so it looks to be between Kurt Busch and JPM. We'll go with JPM
in a minor upset.

Yet more MVM points...I was right about it being either Busch or
JPM, but picked the wrong one.

I never expected KuBu to be so far behind this long
after his move to Penske. One year to get comfortable, OK.
But he hasn't been himself.

Well, this is it! The first race of the Chase. Kinda depressing really to
know that there is only 10 more races before a long, cold, dreary, boring
winter but before you know it, Daytona will be here and life begins anew!

him fall by the wayside for lack of a sponsor.

Let the games begin!

wouldn't it be impossible to be the first out of contention just from the
first race? Even if you finished dead last you wouldn't be out of contention
yet... right?

 Hmmm.....Ryan Newman to win.

1) Three Dodges in the top 10.

3) Top Chevy neither Hendrick nor Gibbs
4) Kenny Wallace finishes top 15.
5) Sadler finishes top 20.

Mosley's revenge Rui Pedro Mendes Salgueiro 23:15:05

Max Mosley is prepapring his revenge after the sado-maso scandal. The
first targets are the german club that demanded his resignation (they
might lose the authority to organize international races, which can affect
the German GP) and Marco Piccinini (currently deputy president for sport).

It seems that, this weekend at Monza, Mosley will try to replace Piccinini
by Alan Donnely who is his prot g .

Bernie seems to know from where the wind is blowing and has said that
now it no longer makes sense to ask for Mosley's resignation since people
have already forgotten the scandal. Of course, Bernie's business model
depends on Mosley surpressing any competing series so he needs Mosley
on his side.

Oh well, business as usual (is it the third time ?).

Wet racers Mower Man 22:10:05
Think Senna, Donington. Monaco in that Toleman.

The best wet races I ever went to were the BOAC 100km's at Brands Hatch,
1970/1971 Six hours of standing knee deep in mud watching the brilliant
Pedro Rodriguez and Seppi Siffert hurling 917s around in pouring rain.
Wonderful, I'll never, ever forget it. The sounds! I still have the race
programmes, but I'm saving them for ebay. Or not.

You tube it NOW, it's brill!

http://tinyurl.com/6nqllx

Significantly, Pedro was black flagged in 1970 for overtaking under
yellows........ although it was then legal to stop for
service/tyres/fuel rather than a "drive through".

Don't start me on long distance sports car racing. (Whoops, think I did
it myself!) See John Wyer smoking a cigar, - but please LISTEN CAREFULLY
to what he has to say about racing drivers. "We have no time for good
losers", says Wyer. Lots more, old fashioned stuff. I like it. Do any of
you?

God was it wet!
