Simulating tracks

Emma 12 May 2005 17:21:23

From Autosport:-
BAR have decided to save one of their testing days by abandoning their
second day of running at Paul Ricard in France on Thursday due to
expected bad weather.

With the team still intending to stick to the 30-day limit agreed
between the non-Ferrari outfits, BAR believed that it would be better
not to run today - partly because rain in expected to hit the French
track later this afternoon and also because the track configuration is
still laid out to simulate Monaco, where the team will not be racing.

Jenson Button and Takuma Sato have therefore been given the day off
before the team return to action on Friday, with the track configuration
set to simulate a Montreal-type layout.

Question - How can they simulate a track like Monaco with all it's ups
and downs on a track like Paul Ricard?

Maybe the drivers are only allowed 95% throttle on any part of the track
that's deemed "uphill" ;)

Dunno, but the gradients at Monte Carlo are diminished by the telly -
it's not until you walk the circuit yourself that you appreciate just
how hilly it is.

And, to quote Murray Walker, "This is an interesting circuit because it
has inclines, and not just up, but down as well." ;)

The same way that teams on their way to Long Beach can simulate
it by running at Willow Springs. Each of the test tracks has a
section that favors 'point and squirt' driving, so they can set
the car for tight turns and getting the power down quickly, which
is needed at both Monaco and Long Beach. Top speed is not a major
concern at either venue, nor is elevation change.
