St. Pete's attendance

Bill C . 5 April 2005 02:39:18
A report at the TSN website says the crowd was 35,000 on Sunday and 40 -
50,000 all weekend.

Massive compared to Phoenix and huge by IRL standards.

They had to copy Champ Car to get attendance up. Imitation is the
sincerest form of flattery, I guess. I suppose to be successful,
they'll just have to keep copying...everything, until they are Champ
Car, except with ugly cars and an copycat TG in charge. Has the man
ever had an original idea of his own that was successful? As long as he
keeps chasing Champ Car, he'll always be a few steps behind. Face it,
he wouldn't know originality if it hit him on the head with a hammer.

But yes, they did definitely draw more people to a street race. How
many people here are actually surprised?

I'll tell you what did the trick. Good old fashioned advertising is the way to
reel in the crowds. Those signs that said:

Free Beer
Hot Chicks
Free Go Kart Rides

...sure did the trick for those crowds of spring breakers...

There were long lines to buy beer at St. Pete but I didn't buy any.

At $6 a beer I paid more for beer than tickets at the Phillies
vs. Nationals game yesterday.

Isn't that just like Tony? Say he stands for one thing, then give you another.
Kind of reminds me of no engine leases, no street races, Real American dirt
track heros, etc...

It's no secret they want to copy Champ Car. Why not? They see the
great attendance Champ Car gets at Long Beach, Mexico, Gold Coast, and that
race in Denver. Champ Car realized a few years ago that if they cant fans
to attend their oval races then take their racing to the fans with street
courses.

I can see the IRL's schedule in the next couple years to be 75%
road/street courses.

Yep, whatever the manufacturers want. They are tired of playing to empty
houses and want to get back to the glory days of the big CART events so
that's the way the IRL is going.

What you mean is that OWRS can't draw a crowd with racing, so they skew the
attendance with a street festival. After all, wasn't it Paul Tracy that
stated something to the effect that most just come for the party, and not
the racing?

You got to do what you got to do in this time of NASCAR dominance. So,
if that means taking the racing to the streets to the people then do it.

Dunno--the last place I'd want to see a race from is the infield of
either Daytona or Indianapolis. I'm 43 years old and never have been
puked on yet, and I don't want to start.

Too bad.

Yo! Dimwit!

"This past weekend's race in St. Petersburg proved once again that the
future of open-wheel racing in North America lies in street or road
courses. Organizers of the IRL event estimate as many as 35,000 showed
up for the event on Sunday and the weekend figures will likely fall
inbetween 40 to 50,000.

Compare that to the paltry 8 to 10,000 who showed up for the oval race
in Phoenix the week before. Coupled with the fact that attendance is on
the decline at oval events unless there's a NASCAR label attached to it
and you can see why the IRL has suddenly discovered what Champ Car has
known all along."

"suddenly discovered"? Is that the same thing as an epiphany? Was a
bolt of lightning involved? Or was this just something that came out of
the group hug in the mens room at the 16th and Georgetown weekly circle
jerk?

Most folks at St Pete can say the same thing.

The Phils game sold out before I made it to the
ticket window. I paid 10 bucks for standing room.

Beers were $6.

As for St. Pete, my Dad wasn't feeling well

tried to buy his paddock pass as he left the

No, most CART fans like a good street brawl. It is the circle jerks that it's
killing. Notice I didn't mention Carey specifically.
We've seen what the Champ car sanctioning league aspired to, and no one> (including the IRL) wants any part of that.

What part of CART don't you like? Engine leases, foreign drivers, foreign
manufacturers, venues outside North
America and races on street circuits and road courses were the staple of CART.

Meet the new CART, same as the old CART, only with the "chosen one" in charge,
only without a meaningful fan base, etc...

Huh? You can't be serious! Nowhere was street racing part of the
impaired "vision" of 1996. Nowhere. How can you claim with a straight
face that the IRL does not want any part of what Champ Car does? They
don't want Long Beach? They don't want road courses? they don't want
to add even more street races? They don't want an international array
of drivers? Maybe it's you who doesn't know what the IRL wants.

They're following so close on the heels of Champ Car they're going to
get kicked if they're not careful. But, imitation is the sincerest
form of flattery. Obviously TG sees more of what he likes in Champ Car
then what he sees in the IRL, or he wouldn't be evolving it
into...yep...the old CART! Hmmmm...actually, that's much more irony
than flattery. Champ Car has moved on, the IRL is still playing catch
up.

big time engine manufacturers, expensive teams, lots of foreign drivers and
empty stands at ovals in his vision. The vision is realized. TGFTG

Massive compared to Phoenix and huge by IRL standards.

What will be the typical weekend crowd at Yankee Stadium? 120,000?
They have games all year so one weekend isn't all that big a deal.

OK, that's not fair... The St. Louis Cardinals will draw 140,000 this
weekend. There, that's better. What? Three times St. Pete? OK,
that's not racing, its athletic sports Wait a minute....

What did Bristol draw last weekend? 275,000? Oops, that not fair.
NASCAR isn't ra... Wait, NASCAR **IS** racing! With a big fan base and
race attendance. That's where all the open wheel fans went.

Open wheel is no longer considered a major sport and is covered
accordingly. Its dead. Doesn't matter if its IRL or OWRS. The
uniqueness of this event will wear off and OW will be left back where it
was last year. Pre-empted by re-runs of Gilligan's Island and the
Swedish Ice Curling Championships.

You know it to be true. If you argue the point you're living in denial

Wasn't there more attendance at the Phillies' game then in St. Pete?

Seem to be copying pretty well. The only thing is that the IRL needs
heavy funding from TG. He needs to keep paying for his sins.

So quick to the name calling. Typical CHUMP response, and a display of a

Hey Casey from Mudville strikes out again,

firing, you might see the reality of the statement.

And don't forget the free tickets!

I was seated in my (paid-for) seat in the top row of grandstand 10 shortly
before the start. A number of people climbed the steps looking for their
seats - they had been given free tickets by the IRL.

Just one problem: the seats were for row 25, while the grandstand had only
24 rows. You get what you pay for!
