[ANNOUNCE] The future of rasf1m

David Betts 10 May 2005 11:20:01

In view of the declining usage of rasf1m the moderation
team feels it can no longer justify asking the
present host to continue devoting time and expense to
maintaining the group's functionality. Consequently, unless a
new volunteer comes forward with hosting facilities in the
next few days, together with some fresh faces for the
moderation team, we will be winding up the group on May 31st..

We would like to thank all those who have contributed to
rasf1m since it was launched and who made it such an
interesting and worthwhile newsgroup for several years.
These days, with usenet traffic down significantly and the
unmoderated group much less unwieldy than it was, the need
for a moderated group seems to have faded away.'

I'd like so say "thanks!" as well. I've enjoyed it here, since fleeing
screaming from the unmoderated group.

Take care everybody!

How very sad. I shall miss it. I like the place, quiet as it is.
Thanks to everybody who's made it work.

Risking the wrath of the moderators one last time - me too!

Wrath! I suspect we must be the least wrathful bunch of moderators in
usenet history.....not that anyone has given us much to be wrathful
about. Thankfully, all the dire prediictions that we would be trolled
out of existence in the first few months proved false. I don't think
we've had to suspend more than three or four posters in our whole
existence.

Thanks for the kind words, but I note that nobody is saying 'give it
to me, I'll run it'. There is not doubt that this place achieved its
purpose for a while, back in the days when rasf1 was bursting at the
seams, but I'm afraid f1 discussion on usenet just ain't like that any
more.

I shall be sad to see it go, but I think this is a sensible point for
the group to bow out. rasf1 is a calmer, lower-volume and less-trolled
place than it was when rasf1m became necessary (there are some persistent
trolls, but we all know them and it's easy enough to remove them!)

There is a horrendous procedure to go through to 'officially' remove a
newsgroup, involving the hassle of an RFD and CFV.

The alternative is for the moderators to just 'disappear' and let
the group fade out - after a suitable period of time a 'moderator
vacancy investigation' is called by The Powers That Be (the
news.announce.newgroups mob); at that point, if someone else wants to
take over moderation at that point they're welcome to, otherwise the
group is removed!

I thank everyone involved.

I think the group still serves a purpose, but obviously much less so
than when it was created. Thanks to all of those who have kept it going
these past years.

Guess I'll have to try to get used to rasf1 again. Wonder if they'd
like their FAQ back?

Maybe you have too good an image of trustability? If you say the
time's up, we believe you... ;)

OK, I gave it a fair shot. Any information or pleasure that might be
had from rasf1 is not, in my assessment, worth the unpleasantness I
still find there.

If anyone who does frequent the place wants to pick up the FAQ, feel
free. Otherwise the final posting will be here, tomorrow.

We have since received a credible offer to host the group, however the
majority of the current active moderators - including myself - are
still planning to stand down at the end of this month. Most of us
have been with it from the beginning and feel it is time to
move on.

If the group is to continue it will need an influx of new
moderators. These volunteers will need to be people who have
read, understood and respect the charter, moderation
policies and guidelines of rasf1m and have demonstrated this
as posters over a period of time. If any of you are
interested in taking on the role and keeping the group
alive, no doubt some of the existing moderators will remain
in place for a while to provide advice, guidance and
continuity.

Please feel free to e-mail me for more information.

As a (mostly) lurker, who has greatly enjoyed the peace and quiet here
which allowed intelligent conversation to shine through, I'd like to
say - thanks for everything, guys.

Oh well. Back to the melee over at rasf1. Like going from a classy
wine bar to the public bar on a Saturday night :-(

Having had a two-second glance back in, I've decided I prefer to go
cold turkey. :o( I wish I had the time to offer to help moderate on
the offered host, but it simply wouldn't be realistic. Selfishly, I
hope somebody finds they can spare the time where I'm not prepared to!

I know the feeling. I've looked after the software for the last few
years, and I'm not able to keep on top of it anymore. I don't have
enough hours in the day, especially now we've got our little ones to
look after ;-)

Depends if it's someone trustworthy. I have complete confidence in the
current moderation team's impartiality and openness. There are other
moderators on other newsgroups who I'd trust about as far as Tony
Blair... if such a moderation team appeared I'd be out of here
instantly.

I'd wait and see what sort of job they did.
