Hmm, I can't find a 'golden' source, might be a slow slog,
But from my 1961/2 Automobible Year,
"During it's October (1961?) session in Paris the
International Sporting Commission of the
International Automobible Federation elected
Maurice Baumgartner as it's president."

Opps, never mind,, so he was he President of CSI, not FIA.
I should delete this post, but maybe this thought will help jog
someone else.

The FIA website has a "book" celebrating 100 years of the FIA, Chapter 16 is
titled "Those who have presided".

"The 10 presidents who have graced the FIA in its first 100 years:
Baron Étienne de Zuylen (France) 1904-1931

Count Robert de Vogüé (France) 1931-1936

Viscount Jehan de Rohan (France) 1936-1958

Count Hadelin de Liedekerke Beaufort (France) 1958-1963

Prince Filippo Caracciolo di Castagneto (Italy) 1963-1965

Wilfrid Andrews (Great Britain) 1965-1971

Prince Amaury de Merode (Belgium) 1971-1975

Prince Paul Alfons von Metternich (Germany) 1975-1986

Jean-Marie Balestre (France) 1986-1993

Max Mosley (Great Britain) from 1993"

Well, that's just great, thank you very much. I didn't know about the
FIA book and I will for sure read the downloaded files, they look packed
with interesting information.

Thanks again.

May be worth adding the Presidents of the CSI/FISA too.

Rene de Knyff (France) 1922-46
Augustin Perouse (France) 1946-61
Maurice Baumgartner (?) 1961-70
Prince Metternich (Germany) 1970-75
Pierre Ugeux (Belgium) 1975-78

Jean-Marie Balestre (France) 1978-91
Max Mosley (Great Britain) 1991-93

The CSI was renamed & reorganised as the FISA in 1979, and was abolished in
1993. Most of its function was taken over by the World Motor Sports Council
(WMSC).

http://www.nevarts.com/fisa says he was Swiss but I'm not too sure how
accurate the information is on there, specifically, this bit, (right
near the bottom):

JMB is president of the FIA and FISA. The past/present presidents of the
CSI/FISA are:

'22-'46 Le Chevalier Rene de Knyff (Belgian) '46-'61 M Augustin Perouse
(French) '61-'70 Maurice Baumgartner (Swiss) '70-'78 M Pierre Ugeux
(Belgian) '78- JMB (Frog)

</paste>

Didn't know Frog was a nationality...

Geoff.

I found Swiss too.

According to one of my books, de Knyff was born in Belgium but lived in
France. In common with most of the early FIA (actually AIACR at the time)
bigwigs he was an important member of the ACF (Automobile Club de France).
He was also a prominent racer for Panhard in some city-to-city races.
