Was very spoiled by my recent experience at the Divi in Bonaire regarding their dive operation with pier and lockers literally feet from where you jump in.
Would appreciate any recommendations for moderately priced hotels (up to about $125 ) which have this type of set-up in Cozumel.
Thanks in advance,

[[ This message was both posted and mailed: see the "To," "Cc," and "Newsgroups" headers for details. ]] I guess what I "don't" mean is the type of hotel with under 15 rooms , mainly for honeymooners or such. There are a number of hotels with more than 15 rooms, though not many more than 15. Most of them are not for honeymooners but for divers or those that like to do tours and such. Many do not have a pool. Quite a few have kitchenettes.
Would like a bigger place with those diving amenities I mentioned which are piers to dive off of and nearby lockers to store my gear. Frankly I don't care about whether they have "scuba dudes" to wash and store my gear. I feel safer doing that myself. While they generally have "scuba dudes", no one will stop you from washing and caring for your own gear. I do it all the time. Though I always take advantage of the drying racks and let them put my gear away into safe storage (with security) every night.
There are lots of docks that you can go swim off of and/or have a little snorkel under, but the reef is offshore and so all diving is boat diving, and so is the best snorkelling.
On local dives there are lots of nursesharks, large groupers, morays, a plethora of reef fish and critters, tongue and groove coral formations. Often will encounter turtles and spotted eagle rays.
Day trips out to the Blue Hole, give you a unique dive experience along with a couple of fantastic follow up dives.
Maybe you should look at a dedicated dive resort out at the Atolls, like Turneffe.
B..t.w., any other destinations (besides Bonaire or Curacao) like Turks & Caicos would be of interest to me also. I'd like to be no more tha. 6 hours flight time from Newark Airport. Doesn't Newark have a direct flight to Belize? Maybe you have to be routed through Houston.
I read somewhere that Newark started direct flights to Roatan (though if they are still in effect, I dunno). You might very well find what you seek in Roatan. I find Roatan fabulous for macro, love the formations, nursesharks are very shy and groupers are smaller. I generally enjoy that the reef is more shallow than at Belize and so safety stops are more interesting to me.
How's Portobelo, Panama, or Margarita Island, Venezuela. Haven't been, but from all my research on Panama, I don't think you'll find what you are looking for there.
Any feedback will be appreciated. | Gun Control. Douglas W. "Popeye" Frederick 21:37:55 |
| | Friday, March 25, 2005 March 24, 2005 The Odd Silence After The School Shootings By Steve Chapman
Rain in Seattle is not news; the news is when rain fails to fall, as it has been doing lately. Likewise, what is conspicuous about the aftermath of the school shootings in Red Lake, Minn., this week was what didn't occur -- a torrent of calls for new gun-control legislation.
The attack was the worst at a school since Columbine six years ago. It came on the heels of some other publicized eruptions of gun violence -- including a rampage by a defendant at an Atlanta courthouse and a mass shooting at a worship service in a Milwaukee suburb. In the past, any of these might have spurred gun-control advocates into a major push for action. But this time, not much has happened, and not much is likely to.
Why not? One simple reason is that Congress and the White House are both in the hands of Republicans, who generally aren't eager to impose restrictions on firearms. But maybe the Republicans are in power partly because of the new mood that has settled over the issue of gun violence.
It's become clear over the years that most of these spectacular episodes are so freakish that they are not amenable to regulatory solutions. It's also become clear that any imaginable gun-control laws are not likely to have much effect on crime in America.
Even the staunchest anti-gun organizations made only perfunctory efforts to capitalize on the Minnesota shootings. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence used the opportunity to criticize Congress for letting the federal "assault weapons" ban expire, mandating immediate destruction of the records of gun sales, and considering a bill to limit lawsuits against gun dealers.
But these had nothing to do with what happened in Red Lake. Records of gun sales? The killer, 16-year-old Jeff Weise, wasn't old enough to buy a gun legally in Minnesota. At least two of his guns were stolen from his grandfather, a police officer whom he killed.
Assault weapons ban? His arsenal included no such weapons -- only a .22-caliber pistol, plus a police-issued .40-caliber handgun and 12-gauge shotgun. Limiting lawsuits against dealers? A bill that hasn't been enacted couldn't have caused a mass shooting yet.
The Violence Policy Center charged that the problem lies in "America's love affair with guns," and held up the example of countries that, it says, have prevented mass shootings through "severe restrictions on the availability of specific classes of firearms, such as handguns and assault weapons." This statement only confirmed the National Rifle Association's suspicion that gun-control advocates are bent on banning entire categories of common firearms -- even though most owners use them in a responsible and law-abiding manner.
But decrying America's love affair with guns is like decrying America's love affair with football or movies. There are some 260 million firearms in private hands in this country. Any solution requiring vast numbers of people to reject something they have long valued is not a solution but a fantasy. It's also an admission that no politically feasible options are likely to have any perceptible effect on crime.
Support for gun control has been sliding in recent years. In 1990, 78 percent of Americans said they thought laws on firearm sales should be stricter. By 2004, only 54 percent agreed. By a 2-to-1 margin, they oppose a general ban on private ownership of handguns -- as dreamed of by the Violence Policy Center. When Congress let the "assault weapons" ban expire last year, there was no public uproar.
Past experience with school shootings, horrific as they are, may have also made people skeptical of overreaction. As it happens, this sort of mayhem is rare and getting rarer. Last year's annual federal report on school crime and safety notes that the number of kids killed at school dropped from 33 in the 1998-99 school year to 14 in 2001-02. Other violent crimes against students at school have also declined.
Common-sense security measures, like limiting access to schools by outsiders, may help. But eliminating such shootings entirely is asking too much. Says Ronald Stephens, executive director of the California-based National School Safety Center, "It's very difficult to stop an incident like this unless you have an army standing at the door."
Most Americans have probably figured that out, and while they may be shocked and saddened by mass murder, they don't expect it to ever be eradicated entirely. That sort of realism is no ally of gun control.

Cozumel Trip Report - November 9th-18th, 2007
Travelled from Poughkeepsie area, to NY's LaGuardia airport, left house at 4:45am for 8:30am AA flight to Miami, than onto Cozumel(ie., one ff and one purchased ticket). brought breakfast with us, Bagels and etc. , since most airlines no longer provide food.
Luggage allowance is 50lbs per bag, so... we now bring 3 bags instead of 2, plus carry-ons (dive mask, computer and regulator and change of clothes).
flight left 20 minutes late , but no adverse effects. arrived in miami almost on time, next plane was in same terminal.
Arrived in Coz and retreived luggage(ie. it was there!). Began looking for our travel agent for transfer to hotel, slew of timeshare agents decended on us, saying they will help us since our agent had not arrived yet. This of course was sham and we went outside terminal and agent was there and off to hotel. We didn't bite on timeshare agents, just be on your toes when you arrive. Actually , its pretty funny, must work on alot of people since there were 10 to 15 sales people?.
We were staying at Iberostar hotel 10 days and 9 nights, approx. cost 1700 for 2, includes food, drink, and transfers. Hotel had 3 restaurants, and alot of bars. beautiful pool, and beach area, even though entry into caribbean was lousy(coral).
We signed up with Dressel Divers in advance saved 15% percent. Paid with credit card Dressel Corp in Spain. I got Whale package 18 dives (came to 27-28 per tank) Most dives were a little crowded but dressel was well organized so it went pretty smooth.
One of the highlights was school(7or 8) black tipped sharks , too bad current was severe that day, alot of heavy breathing just to get to spot. Had to swim into current approx. 100 yards.
Huge groupers, angel fish, turtles and another highlight was the Toad fish, approx. 2 inch with whiskers and wide eyes. Only found in Cozumel(i think). Quite a few Morays and crabs , octopus. Diving was pretty good. This is our 18th year, going somewhere in the caribbean to dive, 5th time to Coz.
Returned Sunday , via Dallas then NY. Bought several liters of vodka in Cozumel, make sure you transfer into checked luggage before leaving customs, because you will need to reenter security and you can't carryon liquids.
Planning next year; back to Belize or Bonaire.
