Disrespecting the Koran?

Lee Bell 26 May 2005 15:50:26
I read this in the New York Times this morning.

"Newly released documents show that detainees at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba,
complained repeatedly about disrespectful handling of the Koran by guards."

Now, I understand that it's a holy book and important to Islamic people.
What I don't understand is why anybody would think that disrespectful
handling of the Koran is any worse, or even on a par with, burning American
flags.

Is it just me or is it crazy to worry about it?

Lee

Guess I shouldn't have flushed that New York Times down the toilet.

I get a free online subscription courtesy of the government. The rag is so
incredibly liberal that I've often considered canceling the subscription
even if it is free to me. I keep it because it's interesting to see what
the other half thinks . . . make that says. I can't believe they think
before saying some of these things.

Did you get the message about Friday, 6/10?

I doubt that christians in their countries prisons are given the same
consideration.

I read this in the New York Times this morning.

It has too many polysyllabic words for Southerners.
"Newly released documents show that detainees at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba,>complained repeatedly about disrespectful handling of the Koran by guards.">
Now, I understand that it's a holy book and important to Islamic people.>What I don't understand is why anybody would think that disrespectful>handling of the Koran is any worse, or even on a par with, burning American>flags.

Non-Americans have about as much reverance for the American flag as you
have for the Lithuanian flag. Burning it means nothing to them, but
everything to right wing nut bars.

An American burns the flag when it has been desecrated in some fashion (by
the actions of an idiot in the oval office for example).
Is it just me or is it crazy to worry about it?

It's you and your ilk. Hang a Bible on your toilet paper bar in the
restroom your guests use and collect comments for us.

The American flag is a symbol of hatred, greed and impeirialism. The
Koran is a symbol of acceptance and love.

And I just cut off my hands after writing that crap.

I think before I could comment properly I'd like to see a definition
of disrespectful.

Burning an american flag is probably disrespectful, but most people
see it for what it is, just an act of political defiance. On the other
hand, being reported as disrepectful to the koran is fuel to the
Islamic hate of all things american, and on that basis I'd worry.

Your worry seems to be of the same kind, though, as the ancient worry of
the catholic church against people defying their earth-centered model of
the world.
If the koran would allow any scientific debate about it's origins, it
would soon become clear that it's claim of a divine origin is absurd.

Much clearer than the same assumption of the bible. Them old ones had
all these extraterrestrial experiences which the koran lacks.

Nah, by your logic, disrespecting the koran is just an act of religious
defiance.

Lets see, behead prisoners - they're cool with that.
Kill a daughter who's been raped because of "family honor" - they're cool
with that.
Disrespect women - they're cool with that.
Burn the US flag - they're cool with that
Jail Christians for being Christians- they're cool with that.
Fly planes into buildings - they're cool with that.

Mistreat a book, and it'll incite hatred in the Islamic world.

check.

Maybe, they should worry a bit how their actions will "incite hatred" in the
US.

You have to go back to Gog and Magog, Nimrod at Affiliates, and the

There is an American flag on my mantle.

It was the flag that wrapped my fathers coffin. My father, and every male in
my family, including me, as far back as you care to look, served.

If *anyone* thinks that burning a flag isnt wrong, but pissing on a stupid
fucking book is, then the Islamics own you.

What I dont understand is why everyone on earth feels like they have to
kneel to Islam, as Islam commits atrocity after atrocity, murder after
murder.

A good answer.
Still I feel, the muslims believe ther faith to be insulted, not their
country. Might be different if their countries borders hadn't been
fumbled with by colonialism.

Too bad they don't apply the same "logic" to those who abuse the koran that
they do to rape victims
In other words, its the koran's fault, and should be destroyed.

€ True, We behave so much better than them. By any standard.

You're finally getting to the heart of the matter.

Do we really behave better than "them." First, define "them" Then
compare apples to apples. You might find we're not nearly so
well-behaved as you think.

Them is any religious fundamentalist who murders and tortures in the
name of their "god".

Especially when it is a bastardized version of the religion used to
inspire hatred.
