Bonaire info if you please

Wes Adams via ScubaMonster.com 24 March 2005 02:34:00
Just found your site, way too much politics!
I am looking for personal suggestions for;
Best car rental
Best place for dinner
and any other info that may be had for June/July dive
trip.
My personal locals: All over Mexico, Fiji, Saba and of course
Cozumel.
Another bit of info would be nice regarding a day lay over in
San Juan.
Thanks

Character assasination and general insults, yes. Politics? Hardly.
Best car rental

They are all pretty much the same. Best to get your car as part of your
package.
Best place for dinner

Mona Lisa, Carpacio, the new tappas restaurant; I put up a trip report in
early February, you should google or deja news it for details on dining.

Hey Chris, don't think that killing Terri is not polictical?
Get a clue. I have a package deal thru Sanddollar but would
like personal info on what other divers have found to the best
in service regarding Bonaire.
Thanks

I believe that is being discussed at rec.scuba and not at
rec.scuba.locations. We generally try (not always successful) to keep this
ng pure.

Hey Chris, don't think that killing Terri is not polictical?> Get a clue.

Chris is correct. You are wrong, apparently because you don't have a "clue"
to the difference between rec.scuba and rec.scuba.locations.
I have a package deal thru Sanddollar but would> like personal info on what other divers have found to the best> in service regarding Bonaire.

Great, good and decent resorts go about like this: Harbour Village (great),
Buddies, Habitat, Plaza, Lions Den (good), Divi, Sandollar (decent).
Personally I think Sandollar is the worst of the "known" resorts on Bonaire,
but it's doors stay open so obviously there are people whose opinions differ
from mine. Personally I wouldn't stay at any of them anymore, except Harbour
Village, because Bonaire now has a great number of condos/apartments/houses
to rent. And since almost any of the dive ops at any of the resorts is as
good as the next one, you can book your scuba at the one closest to you.

Restaurants, though there are many and people obviously have their
preferences, pretty much fall like this: Capriccio's, Rains Fishes, Mona
Lisa, Blue Moon, Amadeus (sometimes) are all respected for having
predictably good food. My favorite is Capriccio's and I like the others
listed, though I also enjoy Beefeaters and De Tuin, There are a lot of other
good restaurants on Bonaire. Richard's has a wonderful setting, but a split
reputation. Some people swear by it and have had nothing but great meals and
service, others find it mediocre at best with maybe some of the worst
service on the island. It's a strange restaurant in the sense that there
doesn't seem to be a constant standard.

There is a little cafe down town called City Seahorse, which we like to
visit some mornings for coffee, juice and bakery goods. It's a pleasant
little place.

I have usually rent cars from ABCarental. But there isn't any difference
between them, Island, Avis, Total, Budget etc. Anyone at the airport is
going to be pretty good. But once on the island there are Mom/Pop rental
places that offer real good deals on older, higher mileage cars and trucks.

Almost everything about Bonaire is good, except getting there. Lately we've
been using AJ and they have been as good as anyone else we have ever flown
to Bonaire on. You spoke about the San Juan stop, but be aware American
Eagle has the worst schedule record of anyone currently flying to the ABC's.
The other thing I like about AJ is that they have not once hassled me about
luggage weight, and I am always way over.

Still, I have heard other's here complain about AJ and the bottom line is
that for a Caribbean destination, Bonaire is kind of a pain to get to, and
the air service, for decades, hasn't been equal to the service the most of
the Caribbean gets.

Yup. I save my sniping for rec.scuba.

I agree with Chris, book your car as part of a "drive & dive" package.
Many of them will also get you a truck, which would be handy for
hauling gear to the beach.
