Dive Computer malfunction

Edward 14 May 2005 14:15:20
I have a new Oceanic Pro Plus 2 air integrated dive computer. I only
used it three times. On the first dive, it worked fine. On the second
dive, the pressure fluctuated several hundred pounds within a few
seconds. It would read correctly, then give warning of low air, then
bounce back to the correct reading. This happened continuously over a
40 minute dive. On the third dive, it again worked correctly.

I took it back to the local dive shop where I bought it, he ran tests on
it guided by Oceanic techs, and found nothing wrong. He told me that
the air might not have been turned on all the way. However, during the
second dive I tried lying on the bottom, barely breathing (i.e. putting
no demand on the regulator), and it still malfunctioned.

In any case, I took it back home and worried about my upcoming dive
trip. Now, while looking through Oceanic's web site, I see that a dive
shop can swap out any Oceanic product that malfunctions within thirty
days, no questions asked.

Has anyone had a problem with any dive computer doing this, and
particularly an Oceanic? Thanks,

Edward

Who cares what experience others have had. You've had a problem, did what
you could to resolve it, and are still having it. Swap the computer.

I had a problem with my Oceanic Prodigy, which I bought when it first came out. I
corresponded with Oceanic and they advised me to send it to them, which I did and
they exchanged it for a new one. If it's not working right you should get it
exchanged regardless of what the bench tests show.

You would do this with the computer(s) in your car.

Given the newness of the equipment, the nature of your problem, and my
own intimate knowledge of an Oceanic warranty - take it back to the shop
and exchange it. Outside of the time involved to write up the
paperwork, it costs them nothing to satisfy you - and costs them plenty
not to. If they know what's good for them and you, you'll walk out ten
minutes later with another brand new computer. If you don't, return it
for credit and shop someplace else where they have a clue about how to
treat a client.

I would request the shop to exchange the computer, if they refuse then call or email
Oceanic and let them know. I've dealt with Oceanic a few times and they are very good
with support.

I took it back again yesterday and they exchanged it for a new one. I
don't know why they didn't offer to exchange it the first time, but all
is fine now and I can relax.

Maybe. You can relax when you know the replacement is working properly.
Don't wait until you're on holiday to find out.
