Drysuits - More hassle than they are worth?

Keith 28 February 2005 02:03:05
It seems that everytime I head out to a local mudhole to dive, someone
is trying out a brand new drysuit. And it seems that every one of
these people, EVERY ONE, is cold, wet and miserable after the dive.

Is this typical for drysuits? Or, in the opinon of those of you that
dive these a lot, is this a fitting issue, etc.?

It could be fit, quality, improper use, wrong undergarments, a
defective suit or some combination of the above.

Add poor training or complete lack of training.

Depends on the drysuit. Neoprene seals tend to have more wetness around
the seals than latex. Fit and undergarments are very important in
drysuit usage. Also, knowing how to use a drysuit helps. I have dove
with a DUI CF200 and have come out completely dry. I have been "moist"
around the seals with Oneill's and another neoprene suit. But never cold
and miserable. I would rather be slightly damp (it can happen when you
overheat) than wet and cold in a wetsuit.

I was cold and wet once while using a drysuit. It was the first time I
used it, and after I got comfortable with it the ex EOD guy who was
mentoring me tortured me with drills that ultimately led me to flood it.
it was well worth it, and I have not been cold in a drysuit since.

No training required for drysuits.

Knowledge, but not training.

No, not typical for drysuits, but likely just a few simple mistakes
working with new equipment. You didn't mention all the wetsuit divers
who were "cold, wet and miserable" in gear that was working as
designed. 8^)

Most of the _regular_ divers I see around here (NE US), are diving dry,
even in summer; we almost never see any problems. Long, slow, easy,
comfortable, relaxing dive.... and comfortable surface interval.... and
repeat as many times as you want: you're not cold.

Take a look at a guide to drysuit diving, you'll see how easy it can
be.

I don't get cold in my drysuit - if I wear appropriate underwear for the
conditions.

Now if I forget my undersuit and am forced to dive in a set of jeans and a
sweatshirt, I'm probably gonna get f*ing cold.

With the right underwear, even wet, you will not be cold.

I use my wetsuit and I have never been nor miserable or even cold.

It always amazes me that some people like to complain about anything
and everything. Many of the times, it is because of their own fault.

I stay away from people (ars..es) like that.

I go diving because I love it. That means that you will not catch me
complian if I am scuba diving.
