Man Charged With Stealing Gun in Bid to 'Rescue Schiavo'
SEMINOLE, Fla. (March 25) - A man was arrested after trying to steal a weapon from a gun shop so he could ''take some action and rescue Terri Schiavo,'' authorities said.
Michael W. Mitchell, of Rockford, Ill., entered Randall's Firearms Inc. in Seminole just before 6 p.m. Thursday with a box cutter and tried to steal a gun, said Marianne Pasha, a spokeswoman for the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Mitchell, 50, told deputies he wanted to ''take some action and rescue Terri Schiavo'' after he visited the Pinellas Park hospice where she lives, Pasha said.
The feeding tube that has kept Schiavo alive for more than a decade was removed March 18 over objections from her parents. Schiavo's husband has said his wife would not want to be kept alive artificially.
Doctors have said she would probably die within a week or two of the tube being pulled.
Randy McKenzie, the owner of Randall's Firearms, said Mitchell pulled out the box cutter and broke the glass on a couple of display cases.
''He told me if I wasn't on Terri's side then I wasn't on God's side, either,'' McKenzie told The Associated Press.
McKenzie said he then pointed his own gun at Mitchell and ordered him to lie on the ground. But Mitchell fled out the store's back door before police arrived, he said.
Mitchell was later arrested in a parking lot and was scheduled to appear in court Friday. He was being held on $125,000 bond on charges of attempted armed robbery, aggravated assault and criminal mischief, officials said.

right - perhaps if pilots had been allowed to carry firearms then or there was a possibilty of armed marshalls, that would not have even been attempted. a gun shop and an airplane of 4 years ago are completely different animals.

The following mind-boggling attempt at a crime spree in Washington appeared to be the robber's first (and last), due to his lack of a previous record of violence, and his terminally stupid choices:
1. His target was H&J Leather & Firearms, a gun shop specializing in handguns.
2. The shop was full of customers - firearms customers.
3. To enter the shop, the robber had to step around a marked police car parked at the front door.
4. A uniformed officer was standing at the counter, having coffee before work.
Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber announced a hold-up, and fired a few wild shots from a .22 target pistol. The officer and a clerk promptly returned fire, the police officer with a 9mm Glock 17, the clerk with a .50 Desert Eagle, assisted by several customers who also drew their guns, several of whom also fired.
The robber was pronounced dead at the scene by Paramedics. Crime scene investigators located 47 expended cartridge cases in the shop. The subsequent autopsy revealed 23 gunshot wounds. Ballistics identified rounds from 7 different weapons. The robber was pronounced dead at the scene by Paramedics. Crime scene investigators located 47 expended cartridge cases in the shop. There's the story of the guy who pulled a gun in a gun store. The> patrons of the store drew theirs and "thus ends the life of ..."
deandrea's guncase in bridgeport CT. friday evening. the store is filled with off duty officers, browsing. one of his friends comes through the door, and kidding, said "it's a stickup!"
the boss quickly shouts, over the sound of guns being drawn and cocked, shout "it's ok, he's a friend."

There was a case of that happening in Houston a few years back... Not only were each of the clerks carrying a weapon on their side at the time, but there were some LEOs in there at the time... Don't remember if they were uniformed or not... Something like 30-40 rounds are fired and the guy gets hit less than 10 times... From what I understand, he didn't die -- Darwin was asleep on the job again...

seems like shooting to distract, rather than to hit.
one good thing about single shot weapons: each shot was important to the shooter.

Last I knew, and this is old info, the two record largest land animals in North America were killed with a Thompson Contender single shot pistol.
A moose, which you could kill with a brick, and a Kodiak Bear.
I'd like to meet the guy that walked up to a Kodiak Bear with a single shot pistol.

I've never lived in an area where there were any moose, so why do you say> that? Do they just stand there while you walk up to them?
They have the predator awareness and survival instincts of a dairy cow.
That said, I wouldn't want to be around one when it finally got mad.

I don't think that tree climbing matters much.
IIRC, it was 14 ft tall on it's hind legs and weighed 3/4 of a ton.

They can do, but it's much wiser that you don't approach them at all. Very dangerous animals, all in all.

Sounds more like typical cop shooting.
Something 12 years ago, Dallas cops followed a guy into Carrolton. He showed what "looked like" a weapon (wallet) and the two cops opened up. Fired 32 rounds from their Smiths, the only injury was from broken glass.

Speaking of "spray and pray", is the Col still with us. I haven't read any gun rags in several years. They seemed to recycle stories about every 13 months and never found any fault with the guns they tested. AR hasn't had any news on Cooper.
