Sorry to dig this thread up. I'm thinking about buying a speed coach and putting it in a club scull. Obviously I don't want to mount it permanently. But will using electrical tape be strong enough to leave it attached in the boathouse? Being a uni club some people are not the most "gentle" when handling boats, and I can't tell people not to use that particular scull - they have as much right to it as me.
Alistair, while the electrical tape would hold the impeller well in the boathouse environment, I'd be willing to bet someone would remove it anyway, or it might get damaged with someone banging it (the little shaft the propeller sits on can get bent easily). I suggest making a couple of marks with a water-resistant felt pen on the bottom of the scull, where the impeller needs to be placed. Then just before each outing, tape the impeller on. I cut 4 strips of tape ... two longs ones to run the length of the impeller and then two for across each end. I've also gone without the two short end ones without problem. I just do the end pieces for added security. Be sure the shell is dry before taping, or use duct tape.
The whole process takes only a couple of minutes. A little bit of time and a roll of electrical tape could save your SpeedCoach investment.
