Crazy Rowing Ad

Alistair Potts 30 January 2006 20:48:05
Saw this at Heathrow today: Philips is advertising one of its razors
with a photo of a sweep four, and each oarsman's blade sort of branches
out about half way down so he has three separate spoons on the end.

It's obviously a fake, which is a shame. I've had a look online but
can't find it.

Now I think about it it's quite clever, although maybe a bit subtle. At
the time I just thought it looked mad.

Ah, I saw that the last time I flew back to Belfast (end of November), but > didn't have my camera with me to take suitable pictures and couldn't find > it on line then!>
mind you better than some of the rowing related adverts I've seen in the > past

I knew I'd seen that somewhere... must have been during all my Dublin trips
in November.

A bit bonkers, but hey, it's exposure!

Yuh like anyone reads the interweb any more.

Usenet is where the kids are now.

I will try to get some hard evidence on this story

I think you're leg is being pulled.

I'd love it if you were right though.

Ok, but why is 2's oar significantly shorter than stroke's?

 Ay Caramba!

A better design might be to have the blades vertically mounted. You
wouldn't be able to feather, but who cares?

Maybe there's a future in all of this - the Red Baron was pretty
successful with his triplane after all.

Fair enough, but the quote on the website that the crew could row with> them?

"In the end the team were able to physically row with the oars we made"
Maybe not quite the same as what we would actually refer to as rowing ;)

The puddles in the advert do look abnormal, so I guess it must be an actual
photo.
Something about it looks very touched-up though
Imagine combining those blades with an 8 or the 12-seat Jano that> Thames used to have - you could sail down a course with a good> tailwind!

ooooo
