Throwing and catching lots of goals for teams that don't win doesn't make you the best player, just a very good player.

Another one is that water can go past in all directions when underwater, on the surface it is harder for it to go above you. Less resistant underwater.

| Katerina Thanou barred from Olympics Guest 22:30:02 |
| | Katerina Thanou barred from Olympics http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=oly&id=3527795
-- Vick
BEIJING -- The IOC has barred Greek sprinter Katerina Thanou from the Beijing Games, saying her role in a drug-testing cover-up four years ago in Athens was "a scandalous saga" that had brought the Olympic movement into disrepute.
Thanou and fellow Greek sprinter Kostas Kenteris missed doping tests on the eve of the 2004 opening ceremony, and claimed later they were injured in a motorcycle accident. Both eventually withdrew from the games and were banned by the IAAF, the governing body for world track and field.
The International Olympic Committee on Sunday excluded Thanou, punishing her for the 2004 doping incident and following a recommendation of its disciplinary panel. In addition, the IOC executive board invoked a second rule which bars the Greek on what amounts to moral grounds.
Spokeswoman Giselle Davies said the IOC made the decision "in order to send a firm signal of the IOC's moral consideration."
"There is a whole string -- a list of events -- that took place over the course of this sorry tale," Davies said. "This string of events really resulted in what the IOC sees as a scandalous saga that overshadowed the Athens Games and brought the IOC, the Olympic movement as a whole, into disrepute. Based on this, the board made its recommendation that she should be ineligible."
Davies said Thanou and Greek officials had been notified of the decision. She has previously threatened to the sue the IOC.
One of her lawyers, Nikos Kollias, said the sprinter would not file an appeal.
"We will not appeal her participation in the games. What matters now is Katerina's compensation," Kollias told the Associated Press in Athens.
Thanou issued a statement harshly criticizing a "prearranged mockery of a decision."
"Since they have not succeeded in breaking my spirit ... the masks fell and we came to this arbitrary and illegal decision that tramples on any notion of justice and equity," she said. "It is these totalitarian practices and decisions that bring the sporting spirit and the Olympic ideal that my country gave birth to into disrepute."
Thanou said she will continue competing.
President Jacques Rogge said earlier the IOC had reserved the right in Athens to open disciplinary procedures against Thanou and Kenteris if they sought accreditation for future games.
Using tough language, the IOC said Thanou's conduct was "totally incompatible with the Olympic spirit."
"The prejudice caused by Ms. Thanou is most serious," the IOC said in a statement. "It affects not only the IOC, but the entire Olympic movement -- in particular, the athletes participating in the Olympic Games."
After sitting out her two-year ban imposed by the IAAF, Thanou returned to competition in 2007 and was entered for the Beijing Olympics last month by the Greek Olympic committee.
The hearing into Thanou's eligibility is not connected to her claim to the 100-meter gold medal won by Marion Jones at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Thanou finished second in that race. Jones was stripped of all five of her Sydney medals after admitting earlier this year that she was doping at the time. The IOC has not made a decision on the reallocation of Jones' medals.

| 2014 Olympics in jeopardy? Chilly8 22:29:23 |

With fighting now breaking out between Russia and Georgia, I wonder if that might result in the 2014 Winter Olympics being either cancelled or moved.
Sochi is right up against the Georgian border, so I wonder if the 2014 Olympics might not be moved, and to where.
I would not be surprised if the 2014 Winter Games were moved to Changchun, China. They hosted the Asian Winter Games last year, and have the infrastructure neeed to host a Winter Olympics, and I see this as the best place to move the Olympics to.

I didn't see him with the South African team during the Opening Ceremonies, but given NBC's lousy coverage it's possible I missed it (or he didn't take part in the Opening).
I really hoped he would be running and would love to see him compete. thanks okerry

The HoF didn't vote in Ken Dobyns even though he was eligible. They also have repeatedly failed to vote in Pat King. KD does a better job than I could ever hope to about Pat King, but the fact that KD didn't get voted in makes the whole thing a sham. Without going as far as Toad here, this would be a fairly large indictment of "Spirit of the Game" if arguably the best player to touch a disc was glossed over just because he was a fiery player. Nobody ever knocked MJ for not being nice. -Handy

| Olympics opening ceremony sets ratings record for NBC... Ubiquitous 12:40:21 |
| | NBC s Olympic dream of ratings fireworks came true.
The network s coverage of the Games got off to a roaring start Friday with the most-watched and highest-rated non-U.S. summer opening ceremony telecast ever.
The Beijing event averaged 34.2 million viewers and received an 18.6 national household rating.
In the nearly 50 years of televised Olympics, that's higher than any previous non-domestic summer opener -- up 35% in viewers from the Athens ceremony in 2004 (25.4 million, 14.6 rating) and 25% higher than Sydney in 2000 (18.5/32). The household rating bested the 1960 Rome Games on CBS (18.1) -- a record that's stood for 48 years, according to Nielsen Media Research.
The mammoth figures weren't quite enough to overturn all opening ceremonies based in the U.S., however. The rating was 14% shy of the Atlanta Games in 1996 (39.8 million, 23.6 rating).
NBC's performance was far above industry expectations. Insiders had estimated that NBC's event last night would drop about 11% from the Athens Games opener. Though public curiosity and media interest in China s opening ceremony has been high, overall broadcast television ratings have fallen 16% since 2004. Viewership for major events such as the Academy Awards have plummeted in recent years.
Plus, NBC has been chided for delaying broadcast of the ceremony until primetime while most nations aired the event live. Yet NBC's patience may have aided the show in ways not anticipated by the network. With gushing critic reviews and lavish images saturating the media Friday, many viewers likely tuned in to see if the ceremony could possibly live up to the hype.
By most accounts, U.S. audiences were just as impressed as the billions of viewers who watched the ceremony live worldwide. Tom Shales of the Washington Post wrote that "eye-poppers gave way to jaw-droppers, stunners were followed by dazzlers," though THR.com s Barry Garron said NBC all-but ignored the political context of the production.
NBC has claimed more than $1 billion in advertising revenue for the Summer Games and spent a reported $894 million to acquire the U.S. broadcast and digital rights. Whether Friday s performance heralds the beginning of lofty Olympics ratings remains to be seen. NBC's Web site saw its most traffic ever on Friday with 70 million page views -- 10 times more than the opening day of the Athens Games.
In general, however, the opening ceremony isn t necessarily a barometer of how the Games perform overall. And with NBC Universal airing an unprecedented 3,600 hours of Olympic coverage during the 17-day event across various platforms, easy comparisons to previous Games may prove futile.
"If you track past Olympics by day the first few days of competition are what really tell the tale -- like the second and third episode of a new series," says TV historian Tim Brooks. "Still, this is definitely a good start."
-- It is simply breathtaking to watch the glee and abandon with which the liberal media and the Angry Left have been attempting to turn our military victory in Iraq into a second Vietnam quagmire. Too bad for them, it's failing.
