And don't forget the top 15% (I think, I'd have to get my lifeguard manual
out to check) of a pool is various substances such as body fat, sweat,
urine, mould etc. You name it, it's probably there at the level of the
water that you swim in!

I like the idea of banning trunks, though, because it has the effect
(perhaps intended) of turning the tables on childish guys who point and
smirk and make silly comments like "Banana hammock alert!"

This is the rule in France, too. Trunks are forbidden in every public
swimming pool. You will see this sign everywhere.

I have no problem with this rule. The bad news is that swim caps are
becoming mandatory in many pools (depending on local management decision, as
opposed to the trunk ban, which is a national rule), and I hate to swim with
a cap...

Long ago, in my high school, any suit at all was banned for the guys;
ugly gray suits were mandatory for girls; caps were required for all.
Red cap: can't swim. Blue cap: can swim. White cap: good swimmer. Need
I add that the boys and girls did not swim together? Another rule of
the times: menstruating girls did not swim. When their name was called,
they reported *regular* from the benches. Those of us who were
embarrassed by our immaturity and wanted badly to swim were deprived by
the need to pretend and announce an untrue *regular*. As far as I know
there was only one such immature girl. A white capper, too.

I am approximately 99, yes. No, we did not try to spy. We would have
screamed and run away. Actually, we thought nothing of it. That's the
way it had always been all over Chicago. I think it was a city
ordinance, but I don't really know that. Maybe it still is?

I'm not quite as old as Ruth. Not yet, anyway. But my mother told me
the same format was also normal in her part of Michigan. That would
have been in the mid-1940's.

swim in trunks or without a cap... :)

I just love when discussions degenerate. That's when I come back and
start enjoying r.s.s. There was a wonderful time some years ago when
r.s.triathlon was a hotbed of total degeneration, easily the best
newsgroup I've ever seen. Granted that's only about 7 or 8.

Back to your question. The lack of a suit is a definite aid for those
men who have trouble swimming straight.

'Speedo' is synonomous with 'swim brief' or 'trunks' in American. Even those
in the biz call them speedos.

I've never been in french pool. Usually I swin in the sea, if I'm at
the french cost. I visited many lakes, were you can swim in summer in
France, too.
I have no problem with this rule.

I only said, that I haven't seen that kin of sign here yet.

We had this rule here in the eigthys, but about 15 years ago almost
every poll allwos swiming without a cap. I never liked using a cap.

I don't rember exactly, but I think trunk came up here about 10 - 15
years ago. Most a still wearing speedos at the pool, but not all.

I came to the US in 1987. Aside from a trip to Italy last year, I haven't

I think the word you are looking for is proverbial. Preverbal speedo's
have not yet spoken, but could at some future time....

Perhaps verbal speedos will be the wave of the future, with some
shouting "keep you head up, 6-beat kick!" and others advocating
fish-like swimming.

I really do prefer DaKitty's *preverbal* for all the reasons you stated
and perhaps because I spend a good part of the day in a preverbal state
of mind. Your idea of verbal swim wear is excellent.

Not so famous, but altogether unsingle.

The further irony being my own typos...speedos should not be possessive,
and it should be "keep your head up" not "keep you head up." Perhaps
"keep you head up" is for special redneck swimwear...
Evidentally I'm also preverbal.
