Quadruple sculls

Liz 24 April 2005 20:25:51
Can anyone here shed any light on when quad sculls first came into use?
I have various old rowing books but they only mention single sculling or
occasionally doubles.

I know that quads were first introduced at the head of the river fours in
1969 (there were only 3 entries) and the Queen mother event at HRR started
in 1981, but when did clubs really start using them?

some of you lot must remember...

The first GB quad at a European Champs was in 1954 (the Women, in the year
that the Women's European Championships were founded).

The first GB Men's quads were in the 1974 Worlds (Senior and Junior), and I
believe that it was in that year that quads were included in the programme
for the first time. Similarly I believe that the men's (and junior men's)
quads were first introduced into the GB National Championships in 1974, with
quads being only for women when the Nat Champs started in 1972. Women's
quads were coxed until after the 1984 Olympics.

I think it wouldn't be unreasonable to regard the introduction of men's
quads to the World & Nat Champs in 1974 as being the start of serious men's
quads in this country, and from then on the numbers continued to grow.

In Richard Burnell's "The Complete Sculler" it says "Quadruple sculling
will make it's international debut in the World Championships in 1974,
so an increasing interest in this new boat class is to be expected. No
doubt a shortage of boats will limit it's popularity in some countries."

just before they were amalgamated into the ARA)
