The Boat Race

Guest 17 March 2005 15:15:31
Thought I'd check out what itv had to say on their web site regarding
the boat race as they are televising it live for the first time this
year, having nicked it from the BBC

http://www.itv.com/page.asp?partid=3066

Quiet pathetic really

Clearly they have grasped the nettle on this one!!

(Be prepared for commercial breaks during the race?)

Do football matches have commercial breaks? I can't imagine, and I also
can't imagine commercial breaks during the boat race.

I love the INCREDIBLE use of capitals everywhere on their statistics page.
There's no less than SEVENTEEN separate words that have been UNNECESSARILY
CAPITALISED on that page.

Brilliant

They are sure trying to capitalize on their investment...

Couldn't they even use a picture of one the crews instead of a clearly
American (Sun Tans) eight.

Incidentally, the BBC's feature "On this day" now talks about the 1984
boat race:

yeah don't you just love the graphic of the map:

http://www.itv.com/page.asp?partid=3069

- 2 boats rowing 1/4 (?) slide, managing to cover vast lengths of the
course per stroke! If only rowing really was *that* easy!

I was also going to mention that highly detailed and informative map, but
then decided not to criticise it since noone should be forced to look at
that website for the best part of twenty minutes.

Anyone know whether the boat race will be broadcast live over the
Internet with English commentary?

Preferably with English video commentary?

But failing that, at least English audio commentary.....

According to Jon, no it won't.
But failing that, at least English audio commentary.....

Try and find out if Eurosport will broadcast the event (they will in
NL); they have a live audio feed on their website. Check the 'LIVE
AUDIO'-link in the left column on eurosport.com.

And what about the speed of the recovery? Time on the slide, clearly,
*is* time wasted after all.

In Firefox they row on the spot; I opened the page some minutes ago
and they're still thrashing away in their original spot with the coxes
still under Putney bridge.

What a terrible site. I mean, really terrible - completely useless
for any purpose, practical or not.

Since they were "rowing" I never looked at that. Duh.

Do I gather that this year's race is to be started with a gun, by the
way?

Well *you* obviously didn't bother with the ITV Boat Race web site
then :-)

ah, well i got as far as

"During the race heart rates will soar to 200 BEATS A MINUTE OR HIGHER very
quickly"

then gave up

(and that's just the spectators who've realised how long the queue for the
toilets at Hammersmith is..)

 I liked....
"The rowers go on the river for water training 3 AFTERNOONS during the week
and spend both Saturday and Sunday on the river too"

So Joe Public sees that these guys train AT THE WEEKEND too and thinks wow
they must be committed, I'd better watch that, or maybe Eastenders instead.

I'm sure ITV must be embarassed. They should have just said "We don't know
much about this canoeing... have a look at boatrace.org"

At least that logo is a link, I thought there would be nothing.

Please be better on the day. Please.

......... So you missed the section offering the weight of the two
crews in pounds (lbs) in pounds sterling? One less entry then ;-).

Doh! Shouldn't have said anything.
