OT: Transition

Ayar 11 May 2005 05:22:29
My Dad passed away on Friday. He died in a hospice, with my wife, my Mom
and I all holding his hand. The previous day, his first at the hospice, was
truly surreal; Thursday was the day that a huge annual parade is held in my
town, which happened to go right down the street my Dad's hospice was on. I
sat by his bed as he lay moaning, comforting him, while outside a succession
of brass bands, clowns, balloons and floats lumbered past. Cheering crowds,
Willard Scott in the reviewing stand, and Chubby Checker as the grand
marshall all added up to one of the most bizarre things I've ever
experienced. I'm sure Dad appreciated the irony after the fact.

The service was held today. It was really beautiful; the funeral director
had to make a few late-night last-minute phone calls, but his efforts paid
off and Dad ended up with the full military honor guard he deserved. A
10-man detail folded his coffin flag, then marched outside, took up
positions with their rifles, and fired a 21-gun salute. It was perhaps the
most moving thing I will ever witness. I think I will make something out of
one of the shell casings. Maybe a necklace. Maybe a keychain. Something I
can keep with me all the time.

I'm not fishing for an outpouring of sympathy here; I know that I have many
friends on this group, and it needn't be said that your thoughts are with me
at this time. Actually, it's a sort of a new beginning for me. As some of
you already know, Dad was sick for the past 5 years. I've been caring for
him as best I could, which took its toll on me emotionally and physically.
But now that he's finally at peace, I feel a sort of relief that he is no
longer suffering, and I can finally relax and have my life back.

The next time you talk to your parents, tell them you love them.

Any time I hear someone complaining about their parents I tell them the
same. I lost my mom to cancer in '96 and my dad in '97 from a heart
attack. I know first hand what it's like to lose someone quickly and
unexpected and the pain of watching a loved one being slowly taken away
from you. No one is promised tomorrow. Let those that are important to
you know that you love them.
My sincerest sympathy goes out to you and your family.

So... you're mom is dating now?

(Before any of you get your panties in a knot, Ayar knows I'm kidding
him. Lighten up.)

Damnit, that should be your, not you're. Now I feel like an idiot.
