seriously. will there be a repeat of the "worst, cheatingist final ever" 11 years after it went down? sockeye vs. jam, club worlds final right there in vancouver?
wfdf won't even use observers - it's not an option.

It doesn't help that the UPA promotes on their website "Ultimate in 10 easy rules" that contradict the actual rules.

The major problem in this case isn't refs, it's that people playin the game don't even know the rules! There's no one in the NFL, NBA, etc... or at any college level (or even the high school level?) or possibly any other "organized" sport where people don't bother to learn the rules to the sport they spend hours training and playing in.
That crap is completely ridiculous. Don't waste your money unless you're going to spend the time to learn to play.
Frank Huguenard 4 August 2008 22:06:54 [ permanent link ]
The worst "rule" that is broken is when a player makes a call that he believes is against the rules and isn't and there is no penalty for this either and nothing the opposing team can do about it.

So true. I think part of this has to be the lack of incentives to
learn the rules.
There are basically no penalties for breaking "rules" in ultimate,
most conflict situations end in a do-over anyway, so why bother

Again, if you go back through this thread, it was Handy and others who diverted the discussion to talk about cheaters, players self-reffing a game that they don't even know the rules to, etc.

It states that it is illegal to run with the disc. This is simply not
true.
It states that picks are prohibited. This also is not true (picks are
prohibited when the offensive player is within 3 meters of the defender).
Lastly (and I know that this is a stale old argument) it says that

These stats are pretty lame and misleading.
An assist should be awarded (like basketball) to the player who threw to the player putting up the shot. If you want to differentiate between thrower and receiver, then count the receiver as 'goals' and the thrower as 'scores'.
Where are:
number of throws number of turnovers throwing percentage number of blocks number of minutes played (or points played) number of fouls
I'd hate to be accused of thread jacking here but after all, we are talking about the ever important topic of WORLDs. As in, this is the so called world championships and the best, the very best they have to offer us with regards to 'meaningful' statistics is goals and throws for goals?
What a complete joke this sport is.

This has nothing to do with HATE.
That your heart is filled with hate when you react to my posts is more about you than it is about me, isn't it?
I'm hell-bent on improving Ultimate. What are you doing to make the game better?

Frank. The thread is called Worlds *Updates*. As in scores, write-ups and anecdotes from worlds. Not rants about how ultimate is not the game you want it to be.
If you want to keep blathering create a thread titled "Frank bitching about ultimate" and spew hate to your hearts content.

And to add, in NO WAY do observers help the above situation.
well its better than nothing. isnt an overruled travel call a
completion......and if it were for a goal, wouldnt it still count.....wasnt that one of the soc/bb senerios?
It was my understanding that the scores were indirect, in other words the throw to the 'assist' [such a stupid description of throwing a score, Did Joe Montana get an 'assist' when he threw a touchdown to Jerry Ric? fricken idiots but I digress] was where the traveling call was, not the actual score itself. The play stops, defense sets up, gets to rest, etc. Advantage cheaters.
-but yea......refzervers are the bare minimum in which the call is at least active. next they just got to grow some balls and make it a turn when violated.
Something other than having it end like it did. Pretty fucking meaningless. 30 years of this crap.
How can you honestly say Canada was in control when they cheated as much as they did.
OK, maybe the two go hand in hand, because they cheated so much, of course they were in control.
I only saw on bad call by Sockeye. The first foul call was pretty weak.
The second foul call where the Canada player flattened the Sockeye player after he got the D was still a foul. Where in the rules does it say you're able to clobber the offensive player as long as you get to the disc first? This is supposed to be non-contact, not non-contact as long as you get to the disc first.
The other sockeye calls were for traveling which Canada was doing all game long.

Canada seemed to be clearly in control the entire game until some
really awful calls by Seth Crockford made the game close. I would like
to say that Sockeye played a bad game but honestly Canada just looked
amazing out there. Derek Alexander and Mike Grant were the two best
players on the field. But I still think the story of the game was Nord
looking straight-up terrible. He was scored on at least 4 or 5 times
and didn't even have any spectacular bids because he was so far behind
Mike Grant all game. I was not expecting that at all.
I think Canada stills wins this game if they don't travel but we'll never know, will we?
Competition can only be apples-to-apples comparisons. You can't have one team playing by a different set of rules than the other.
Oh, and KD couldn't carry my jock Todd. Don't even get me started. And I don't cheat so don't include me in your convoluted thinking.

yea, that 44 guy was takin a train every time he got the disc.
i wonder how outcomes like this would have been altered with the solstice "refzerver" type facilitation in which travels are actively enforced. I guess maybe not all that much with such soft consequences

Sure. Canadians just wouldn't have traveled. They would have learned a long time ago not to do it.
My point is that the Canadians looked like the better/stronger team. It would have just been nice to see some real competition instead of make-believe.
Competition can only be apples-to-apples comparisons. You can't have one
team playing by a different set of rules than the other.
-which is usually the case in ultimate.....to a certian extent.
yep. which is why I think observers are a joke. observers come from teams who all have their own variant of the rules. ---------------------------------------------
Oh, and KD couldn't carry my jock Todd. Don't even get me started.
--i think i already did. are you saying that you are the best ultimate player to ever touch a disc? Is there anyone that was better than yourself?
There's probably a lot better than me but KD is not one of them.
-----------------------------------------------
And I
don't cheat so don't include me in your convoluted thinking.
c'mon now.......you never cheated in ultimate even once????, never went off sides or ANYTHING?????
Maybe a long time ago but I have not willfully cheated in many, many years. I don't need to. I'm pretty enough without it.
I played goalimate against him and beat him (including a foot block; he was kind of stunned) a few years ago in santa cruz. It was a furious team against me and the santa cruz second stringers.
