Fees may go up.

David Courtney 27 May 2008 16:06:19
"Out-of-state snowmobilers would pay nearly double the fees to ride
Wisconsin trails under a bill passed by the Senate Thursday. The measure
would increase the out-of-state trail-use sticker fee from $18 to $35
starting July 1. Over the past two years, an average of nearly 32,000 such
stickers have been sold. The increase in cost would generate an extra
half-million dollars for the state. The bill must pass the Assembly and be
signed by the governor before taking effect."

Never mind that out-of-state snowmobilers contribute about 100 times
that much to our economy... let's try to hose them for another 17 bucks just
to prove we're greedy bastards. >:-(
If those dipshits in Madison had any brains at all they would let the
out-of-state people ride for free. One weekend of hotels, food, and gas
generates more tax revenue that their stupid trail pass does. Idiots.

It cost me $78 to reg in state for the first sled $48 for every other sled
and out of states $98 and $63 so don't complain to loudly and in this area
we haven't had good ridable snow in 4 years without traveling 1-4 hours to
get to the snow.I would gladly pay $35 for an out of state reg.

What I'm wondering is why the State is pocketing this money? In Quebec,
most of the trail pass fees are kept by the clubs that sell them with a
small portion going to the Quebec Federation of Snowmobile Clubs:
" As you must know, most of the revenue from your permit goes directly to
your club. So if you buy where you ride, your money improves the trails you
ride most often."
http://www.fcmq.qc.ca/english/pages.asp?id=85

Except for what is collected as sales tax, the government gets nothing.
Unless the Wisconsin Government subsidizes the trail system (e.g. it costs
more to maintain the trails than what is collected in fees), the State
should just give the money to the clubs.

As far as the cost, is the $35 fee a one time only fee? If so, then this is
dirt cheap. Here, we charge $50 per day or $150 for a 7 day permit. Even
if it's per day, it's still cheaper than here.

I pay $45 bucks to register my sleds each in NY. All sleds ridden in NY must
have a NY reg. .
I live in NJ. The $45 is the member of a snowmobile club price, non club
members have to pay $100 . My club dues for a family membership are $25 .
This is resident or non resident. Part of the reg. fee goes to the state
trails fund to reimburse the clubs for trail grooming.
The trails I ride have improved grooming wise over the years, for me it's a
small price for better trails since I spend a lot of money getting to the
trails and on a house on the trail.
Nothing worse than driving 4 hrs. to ride on rough or moguled out trails
IMO.

Yeah... I understand and don't mind paying the registration (some of the
money goes to trails, signs, etc). I register 3 sleds every year and only
ride one of them most years.
It just bugs me that my state feels the need to hose the "tourists" who
spend a fortune here. We have a lot of people from the Chicago area that
own cottages or cabins or come and stay in hotels... and buy food, gas,
parts, etc.
Every once in awhile the "truth" will come out in a news story... that
most of the money is getting diverted to "enforcement" rather than being
spent on grooming and infrastructure. Basically the "administration" eats
up the money and a little bit of it goes into paying officers and wardens
overtime to go ride around and hassle people. LOL

I agree, trail money for trail maintenance. Enforcement makes it's own
money.
I ride on some town maintained trails that require a permit to ride on, Old
Forge NY.
These trails are the best maintained groomed trails in the Adirondacks lake
effect area. I gladly pay the $60 yearly permit fee to ride these trails.
There are other ''free'' trails in the area but unless your riding on a
Thur. and the local club grooms they are rough, cratered out by Sat. noon.
In NY sled cops aren't that bad IMO, mostly I've only seen them in the
notorious problem areas on Sat. afternoons.
It's amazing the amount of expired registrations sleds you see pass by just
taking 5 trailside or getting gas.

[snip]

Wisconsin has MANY miles of trails run by the "state",
that are not designated "club trails".

I can not find the same, next door, in Illinois.
Wisconsin is considered snowmobile friendly, AND tourist friendly,
because of this.

I already don't ride Wisconsin because of the current trail sticker.

Hey, wait now... there's nobody in Madison clever enough to even think
of something as shitty as a "trail pass".
The only reason we have one, is because sledders from Wisconsin were
complaining about having to buy a trail pass to ride in Michigan... and then
some jackass in Madison got the idea that they could scam some easy money
off the people from Illinois by doing the same thing.
So... you started it! LOL

Why do you pay $73 for the first sled? It should be $48 per sled if you're
a club member.

You still have to pay for the $25 club membership so its $73 but if you join
a club then register later it seems like your getting a deal.I usually join
the club and register at the same time because the clubs can be slow getting
out your membership cards like this year when we had snow before they were
mailing out the cards.
