Fontana, Max Mat returns!

T3 26 April 2005 17:17:19
IIRC Mat's swept the place clean for the last couple of years, he's
going in throwing a no hitter so far this season and coupled with the
tracks new surface, many expect him to be "maxed out" point wise when he
gets to Sears too. His closest competition may come from his young team
mate, Spies was pretty fast there at testing earlier but at this point,
it's hard to imagine anyone getting between "Max" Mat and a checked
flag. So far this year he has totally dominated the two tracks that is
said to represent the extremes of AMA Superbike racing, that does not
bode well for his competitors. Will his perfect season continue? we'll
see....

Everyone but ducati is using ama-spec oxygenated jet fuel; ducati is giving
away 7-8hp using race gas. They say Shell is working on the fuel for ducati,
so I hope it comes around pretty soon, or Neil will be hanging it out for
2nd or 3rd.

Shell is working on it? Makes one wonder what Eric was using last year, huh?

correction - oxygenated rocket fuel, not jet fuel.

That Soup article seems a bit lame to me - the 999 lacks off-corner
grunt? Whe he was racing with Spies on Saturday and Yates on Sunday,
Hodgson sure didn't look like he had power problems compared to the
Suzukis, either off the corners or on top (such as that is at Barber).
What got those guys by and away seemed to be better handling, turning
much better.

When they say "The machines manned by Carl Fogarty and Troy Corser in
the late 1990s had a ferocity exiting the corner that these factory
Ducatis do not" they are really talking about a relative measure -
relative to 750-4 SBs, that is. Under those rules the 750s might not
have given up much peak horsepower to the current 1000-4s, but big cubes
spread out over four cylinders means a lot of low end and a broad
powerband. What these people are missing is the ol' pasta-eater's
advantage...

I have to disagree on one point. I think twins should definitely
have either a weight or engine size advantage. They allow
749 twins in FX, in club racing classes there are always different
displacements allowed according to the # of cylinders. Even
in MotoGP there is a lower min weight limit if you have fewer
cylinders. Why shouldn't it be the same in superbike?

Because Ducati doesn't build anything larger than a 1000. If they built
a 1200, then you can bet it would be made legal and the rules on
modifications would be made the same as well. I think that's the worst
thing about SB today, having different mod rules for twins and fours.
I'd rather it be weight and be done with it. But everything would be
much better if Ducati only came out with a bigger twin.
