after a couple of years, I finally again able to attend to one day of top international volleyball in my neighborhood: Women's Top Volley in Basel (<http://www.topvolley.ch>).
Cannes was the only team I did not see (had to leave during the final set of match #3 yesterday), but we all enjoyed it very much. Overall, some very athletic teams, lots of great attacks, very few combination plays. Many teams are using a sliding attack when the middle hitter starts in front of the passer and ends up hitting the ball behind the setter, jumping with one foot. This has been a standard attack at least since the 80s (China), and still very hard to block (because the attacker has a lot of time deciding when to hit).
Very strong serves, but (alas, this seems to be the way of life nowadays) also way too many service errors.
Swiss Champion Vol ro Zurich did well yesterday, the rooster is as international as it can get (IOW: zero Swiss players . Robyn Ah Mow-Santos did OK, but seemed a bit uninspired (maybe understandably, as with Vol ro playing in CEV Champions League, and doing well, it's already been a long season).
Norisha Campbell was a strong factor in the German team of Rote Raben Vilsbiburg (never heard of that team befor, nor the city, for that -- thanks to maps.google.com, I know it's north-east of Munich).
The team from Baku made a good impression, too, consisting possibly more or less of the Azerbaidschan national team.
Notably, it's two lefties (and attacking rather unorthodoxly), who have been very hard to block: US Nancy Metcalf (OH) for Murcia, and ("of course") Virgine De Carne (OP, Belgian, with Vol ro). De Carne did very well yesterday, playing with very good eye, finding weak spot after weak spot in the Germans' defense.
We seem to be very lucky indeed: I just came back from watching TV (local private station), and was able to catch some of today's other matches.

AFAIK, that kind of attack was promote by Korean national team, so nowadays we use name "korea" for it. It is very difficult to make a good defence against it and that is the reason why almost every female team use "korea" as first tempo attack. Thanks to "korea" Victoria Rava became one of the best female MB in the world and Cannes gained CL title!

De Carne is great player! Almost perfect attacker. I watched her many times while she played for Asystel Novara and once in Belgian national team against Serbia and Montenegro.

yes, it surely is a strong option whenever you have the setter at the net and start with both attackers in front of the setter.
[Now, I wonder why it is rather uncommon in men's volleyball?]

She did not so well in the later matches. Observing the results, it also seems that Vol ro's group was weaker than the other one (teams from it lost both semis and the match for 5th place).
It is true that the slide is seldom applied in the men game. A survey of hitting data at the recent world championships indicates that for the 10 best performances trough the middle the men score about 5 % more kill than the women. There is hence apparently no reason for an other strategy than the current one the more as in the men game the opposite is more often attacking from behind and the slide could hinder in certain positions the opposite attacker.
Volero is at the second position in Swiss competition and well placed in the CEV cup although they lost last match against Hotel Cantur. In that pool best outside hitters are Rinieri for Jesi and Gashula from Volero who are both scoring better than De Carne 55.93 /45.33 against 43.28.% De Carne makes near equal errors as compared to Rinieri 13 % but clearly more than Gashuka with 9.3 %
De Carne is still exceptional good player not only in attack but also in service where she is leading in the pool with 8 aces together with Rinieri and Togut.
Interesting that the strong Spanish team with Kilic could not deal with the Brazilians .

Makes sense.

It's hard to fathom how a complete Vol ro team can loose two matches in the Swiss championship at all. But both were in November, and I guess that was when half the team was away in international tournaments ...
