Just an update on the above thread to say thanks for the advice everyone gave me.
I did the swim last Monday and appart from a Jelly sting to the neck, it went really really well and I had a great swim - Gozo to Malta (via Comino) in 2hrs 20 - not the quickest time but I really enjoyed it and the scenery was perfect. I would like to do a return swim next year maybe.
The above link has a few pics of the swim (click "Slide Show" if you want to see the picture captions). If anyone fancies a 3 mile or 5Km swim, I would heartily recomend it.

Cheers all.>
Congratulations - looked like fun. I open water swim here in southern california regularly and finally was able to enter the Gatorman swim in La Jolla last September. A 3 mile (3- leg) swim from La Jolla Cove past the shores to Scripps Pier and back.
No wetsuits allowed. I had a paddler to help me stay on course and a yellow cap. No jellyfish that day, but about a week early I had punched a jellyfish about 1/4 from shore after avoiding about half-dozen others. That one got me on a finger, two good stings!
Anyway, our water was just around 70 degrees Fahrenheit and I pulled a 1 hour 20 minutes. My potty break at the midpoint chewed up some time. I had expected to finish in just over 1 hr 15 minutes, which I didn't make, but I did finish strong. This year I am planning to do the 1 miler in the morning and then go back for the 3 mile Gatorman and hopefully do at least as well time-wise.
Now when we travel my kids ask me "how far is it over there, and can you swim there?"

I might be there next year doing this organised swim tour:

My dive computer was showing 17 degrees at the surface on other days. Suspect it was about 17 on the day of the swim. Didn't feel cold though. I think the 2007 trips to Malta are later in the year than 2006 so it should be a few degrees warmer by the time you go.

I was booked on this exact tour, but it was cancelled due to lack of bookings. I had my flights booked and Ј1000+ of sponsorship - so I kind of had to do it alone. That said, it worked out well as I got to do the swim at my own pace - and spend the rest of the time diving. In defence of Swimtrek, they did offer to pay for my flights if I decided to cancel them and they also helped me out with planning the swim which they didn't have to do.
I did a SwimTrek trip to the lakes last summer and it was really great and I would recomend it (I am doing it again this year hopefully) so I would imagine the Malta trip will be fantastic. Kelly in the office is really helpful, and Simon (company owner) is also really helpful to talk to if he is in the country. The only problem is choosing which one to do next - I would love to do WhitSundays but its a bit of a trek, Croatia is next favourite. Anyone in this NG done the Thames swim ?

Doesn't sound that much warmer than Heron Lake this morning - that was 16C...

I hope there are enough people for it next year.

I did the Croatia trip last year, it was well organised and a stunning location for swimming, I went in early May the weather was warm but not too hot, the water was warm enough (about 20C) for me not to bother with a wetsuit (apart from the one day in the river where the water was cooler). About the only thing I'd say against it was that after about the 5th day of swimming between remote islands I was getting a little bored of the swimming - you spend a long time in deep water with the islands far away and nothing around you to look at. I liked the day in the river as it was a refreshing change (lots to see). Thats one of the things that appeals with the Malta trip is apart from the swim to Gozo and back, much of it is around the coast so the scenery will be constantly changing.
Unfortunately although I'm quite keen to do the Thames trip, my wife would prefer somewhere warmer and further away for a holiday...
Then I would think the NZ Bay of Islands swim would be ideal. I have> mentioned this to some of my swim buddies and they are keen as mustard> - we're going to make enquiries.>
Roberton Island is just about the most perfect island you could imagine> and non of the regular ferry cruises stop there - I have only ever been> on a sailing trip. So swimming over there would be awesome - it has a> beautiful lagoon for snorkelling
Yes it does sounds wonderful - one day, one day...
