I think you are giving him too much credit.

The mere fact that this person suggested that the pitchers are throwing 85 mph reveals his lack of knowledge of the sport.
Even top level collegiate pitchers are seldom hitting 70mph. They throw many offspeed pitches and often sacrifice a little speed for accuracy.
And, college pitchers throw from 43 feet - not 40.
Although not very well articulated, there *is* some logic in the argument. There is much truth in the criticism that high level fastpitch softball generates outrageously low-scoring games that are HIGHLY pitcher dominated. Even a below average team will experience great success with a fireballer on the mound. Worst yet, that fireballer can practically pitch ALL THEIR GAMES - unlike baseball where a dominate pitcher, as a practical matter, can only pitch so much. Not so with softball!
It is unpopopular among the average American fan for much of the same reason that soccer has a difficult time finding a big audience.
Softball pitchers throwing overhand is simply stupid.
The reverse argument can be made about basketball. With scores well over 100 being common - wouldn't the game become more interesting if the basket were raised 2-feet?
