Yet another silly baseball question Robot Fighter Magnus 06:19:26

(That is, if anyone frequents the group anymore)

Tipped third strike into the catchers mitt, he's not got control of it
and while juggling it, tips it forward enough for the pitcher to
catch.

Is the batter out? The catcher never caught it.

Inverted Pivot Question (via Email) Frank Huguenard 05:24:22
 This, from a friend:

Frank

Hi. Can you draw a diagram for me of the inverted pivot? Where is the
semi-circle and what is the direction of hte pivot for a number of cases?

Thanks
xxxxx
_____

Hi xxxx,

I'm hopefully going to be making a video soon to help illustrate it better
but it's not so complicated.

By inversion, I mean on a play that you would normally pivot clockwise, to
invert the pivot, you would pivot counter clockwise.

This ONLY applies to the initial move when you catch the disc (by my
definition of what an inverted pivot is).

So, normally on a dump swing for instance, if the play is going from the
left of the field to the right, as you catch the disc, you'll normally pivot
counter clockwise for the 'continuation' (I loathe that definition of
continuation but let's not go there).

If you were to invert your pivot, you would catch the disc and even if it
means pivoting more than 180 degrees (sometimes even more than 270), pivot
clockwise to the same play.

There are numerous advantages to this:

o Your defender will have to honor your inversion and will not cover
you so tight (you'll freeze defenders because they'll have to guard against
multiple attacks)

o Your options if the 'continuation' is looked off for whatever reason
are more

o Your body mechanics when throwing the continuation will be more sound
as you'll come out of the pivot balanced and ready to attack (I've seen guys
throw at least 20 yards further on their hucks because of this).

o You'll stop in fewer steps (When and if you ever make this discovery,
you'll begin to notice how much traveling goes on when people don't invert
pivots; since no one does this, everyone thinks it's 'reasonable' that those
extra one or two steps are necessary to stop but when you see that you can
stop in three when everyone stops in 4 or 5, you'll know what I'm talking
about).

Cheers!!

__

Thanks, Frank.

but I still cannot picture what "inverted" or "pivot counter-clockwise"
would be.

Does "inverted" mean that the toes are pointed in a certain direction - say
toward the thrower vs toward the defenders? If not the toes, what part of
the foot/body/pivot is inverted...?

And by "pivot counterclockwise" do you mean moving the non-pivot foot around
the pivot foot from, say 3 o'clock to noon vs 3'oclock to six? That part
confuses me... assuming my toes are pointed away from my defender toward the
thrower or toward a sideline in the 180* semi-circle... and i'm righty
...that doesn't help me to see that i am gaining an advantage over clockwise
pivoting.

I am interested in this footwork since, dynamically, I understand the
advantages you are pushing for.

Looking fwd to your answers

xxxx

_______

Inverted is probably completely the wrong word but it's used under the
context that in most situations (98% or so), ultimate players will catch the
disc and automatically pivot their body either clockwise (looking down from
the sky) or counter clockwise, depending on the flow.

So basically, if your muscle memory in a current situation is to pivot in
one direction, most likely an inverted pivot would be totally against what
your body 'naturally wants to do'. Many times you'll have to fight against
your momentum but my analogy for that is skiing. If you don't fight your
momentum skiing, you'll sail off the cliff.

It doesn't really have much to do with the toes (well, that's not really
true but in the context of your question it is).

And by "pivot counterclockwise" do you mean moving the non-pivot foot
around the pivot foot from, say 3 o'clock to noon vs 3'oclock to six?

Um, typically when I invert a pivot, I'll basically have my body squared in
the same direction that I would have it had I pivoted without the invert.
If I'd be facing south with the conventional pivot, I'd also be facing south
after the inversion. It's just that when I get there, my hips will be
square, my balance will be on top of my pivot foot and the defender will be
a few paces away from me (they have to; it's counter intuitive but it's
something you'll only see when you begin inverting).

I'm floating out a test balloon here to see if there's any interest.
I'm a BC player and been talking with my teammates about the
possibilities of an ACC Tournament sometime next year.
The reality of it would be that we most likely would not be able to
host (a. because we're so far north, and b. because no one would want
to travel all this way), so I'm wondering if there's any interest in
the other ACC schools to possibly organize something.
I don't know about any other schools, but funding from Club Sports for
our team is very minimal. However, maybe if we generate enough
interest, they would be more willing to partially or completely
finance an ACC only tournament, because it will help spur conference
rivalry.
So, any ACC Captains or players out thre who like the idea of this,
lets see if we can stir up some interest.

I'm nowhere close to being a nutritionist, but 70% protein sounds like
overkill. I would think that kind of ratio would be more for the

Unfortunately, I'm just a sports drink and occasional pasta kind of guy,

India Should Boycott the Beijing Olympics

Bharat J. Gajjar

Dear Editor,

Please print this article in your newspaper.

Sincerely,

India Should Boycott the Beijing Olympics

Due to the atrocities of the Chinese Government on the
people of Tibet I feel very strongly that India should
boycott the Beijing Olympics.

I think most Indians would agree. The Indian Government
run by the congress party who came in power with the help
of the communist party of India is keeping quiet because
they came into power because of them. The communist party
of India and the Chinese communist party feel they are like
two sisters. If the congress party does anything they
might lose the support of the communist party of India.

It was wrong on the part of Prime Minister Nehru to give
away Tibet to China, however all the Indian population is
with the people of Tibet. We should tell the Indian
government to boycott the Olympics games in Beijing. It is
the right thing to do.
