WTB: 7 Speed bar-end shifters (indexed)

Jack Sprat 2 April 2005 19:40:51
I took all my 7 speed stuff off my old bike to turn it into a fixed-gear
because it has horizontal drop-outs.

Now I want to put all those 7-speed parts on my new Jamis Aurora frame,
bit it doesn't have down-tube shifter bosses, so my original downtube
shift levers won't fit. So I'm thinking I could use bar-ends, but I
can't find Shimano 7-speed indexed bar-end shifters anywhere.

Please reply to JohnSwanStone --((AT))-- hotmail --((DOT))-- com

b.t.w. I really, really, really want to stay with indexed shifters.

Thanks,

J.

How about a clamp-on downtube shifter mount? This should be easy to
find on an older (mid-80's) road bike.

Unless I'm mistaken the 8s are said to work just fine. Haven't tried them myself
but was planning to during a previous round of upgrade.

You'd have to check with Sheldon Brown to make sure but I believe that you
could use the 9-speed shifters and just use the outside of the derailleur
cable bolt and it will work as well. Or you could space the freewheel
closer.

And here's a little trick - Shimano 7-speed spacing turns out to be nearly
the same as early Campy 8-speed. Consequently you can use early Campy
8-speed Ego Shifters and rear derailleur to shift your Shimano rear cogs.
I've done that on my Colnago Super. It's a little touchy that the spacing be
exactly even on the cogs but it works fine.
