Gibo The Baby

Frank Drackman 28 May 2006 23:29:12
 Nice quote from Gibo:

"I was hoping to have more help from a rider like Cunego. We could have made
a different Giro if he was there to help me," Simoni said. "Instead, I was
often alone in the mountains and I couldn't overcome the difference
Savoldelli made to me in the time trial."

He was absolutely correct if a bit unheroic.

And what support did Savoldelli have in the mountains? It would be nice for
a change if he just said that he was beaten by a rider who was faster.

but that may be his point- that since savoldelli had such a weak team,
and simoni's was (theoretically) stronger (what with having last year's
winner along as a super domestic), if they had lived up to their
potential they could have beaten savoldelli, even though he was stronger
*individually*.

He's jealous, still. Cunego had free reign to ride this Giro as a> training race for the Tour. It's the big secret that no one on Lampre> will admit, at least not to any Italian journalists while the Giro is> on.>

He couldn't ask for more than the help DiLuca gave him on Saturday. He
didn't do one pull up the Finestre and all he had to do was stay on Rujano's
wheel up to Sestriere and sprint past for the stage win and he would have
been in pink for Sunday. He always predicts that he is going to win and has
an excuse when he doesn't.

what he said before saturday's stage sounds fair and reasonable to me
(thank you cyclingnews)-
----------
After yesterday's time trial, it was perfectly clear two-time Giro
champion Gilberto Simoni (Lampre-Cafitta) isn't giving up the race
without a fight. The 33 year-old rode well enough to finish in the top
10, but concedes making up a two minute-plus deficit on the maglia rosa
of Paolo Savoldelli will be difficult, though not impossible.

"The worst-case scenario was to lose more than a minute [to
Savoldelli]," said Simoni post-stage. "Savoldelli demonstrated he is
really strong, but for what it's worth, I don't give up. Ever since we
left Reggio Calabria, I have been chasing the [overall] win, and
tomorrow, I hope the margin of 2'09 that separates me from Savoldelli is
reversed."
----------

(maybe he has said some other smack talk about this year's giro
somewhere, but i haven't seen it, sorry.)

some people on this group are so sensitive to excuse making that they
can't see how trying to understand how a failure happened can be a good
thing. i would rather read their real comments on the situation than
some carbon "i tried my best, but the stronger man won." remark. suit
yourself, of course.

so did you know i was thinking of you with my final comment about being
sensitive to excuse making in that last post?

you do make a good point that comments about one's team should be kept
"in house", but it'll be less interesting to me that way.

also, i have heard plenty of excuse making (although obviously not as
much as you). some guy once complained that i beat him in a race
"because you never take a pull".

never mind the fact that when he and i were both dropped from the lead
group, and i came past him by myself, he couldn't get it together enough
to get on my wheel. then he just assumed i sat on the rest of the race
(even though he wasn't present to witness) when in fact i caught and
then pulled the eventual women's winner up to the next big bunch (who
had by this time also been dropped).

i don't consider the quote that started this thread to be any where near
the excuse making that this story illustrates.

heather, took 2nd place

We have been over this same thing last year, haven't we? Everybody
whining how Simoni is such a whiner, then somebody came up with a better
translation or put his words in context and all was cleared up. Just ask
the girls from Velo Bella.

sorry to go on, but a minor detail- i should have said that this
happened in the first 5 miles of the race, and that we were both fresh*
at this point.

Here you go, straight from the man himself:

Grazie a tutti Voi cari tifosi....veramente siete stati grandi...mi
avete sostenuto fino all'ultimo ...leggendo i vostri messaggi questa

incubo!!!!)..poi una volta recuperato deiciderГІ i prossimi programmi...e
soprattutto deciderГІ la squadra per il prossimo anno!!!

Now if *that* doesn't put things in a different light for y'all..!

Guys should NEVER make excuses about what the fems are doing when
they're in a race with mixed groups on the road. Even when it is
legit, it won't sound good after its been repeated a few times. First
step in ending up with an official's license.

Unless its your wife. Then everyone figures you're being polite or
something.

Most words in this part should look familiar:
Innanzitutto un Bravissimo a Savoldelli...ГЁ stato il piГ№ costante di
tutti e il piГ№ intelligente nel gestire la corsa.

First of all, a Big Bravo for Salvodelli. He has been the most constant
of all and the most intelligent in managing the race.

As I said, it seems a bit pedantic but was nonetheless true. Since I> don't speak Italian and I didn't hear what he REALLY said I can just> judge that he was telling the absolute truth.>
Or are you forgetting that Cunego came into this Giro as last years> winner and a super star climber?>

I totally disagree. He knew that he was going to give up time in the TT and
that he had to make it up on the climbs. The quote that I started with was
him complaining about the lack of help in the mountains. He had a very big
chance on Saturday being the virtual leader on the road but he could not
stay on Rujano's
wheel up to Sestriere. If he had not cracked he would have won the Giro.

To me, what he said was fairly accurate, but there's no doubt that he
shouldn't have spilled that out into the public domain. Complaining about a
teammate in team meetings may cause *some* strain, but it surely does cause
strain when it's done to the press.

Well he must have been very disappointed and Basso asking him to take
it easy was certainly on his mind when he got dropped. What I don't
understand is why he couldn't dig in for a couple more kilometers.
