OK there are all of 39 starters @ intertvals of 1:30.
Can anyone explain why they have "waves" - adding 84 unneccesary
minutes between the first rider and last rider.
AFAIK they have no late registration.
The trial is two laps of the circuit. The break is to give time for the riders to get past the start point once so we don't have riders starting on top of other riders going past.

Don't know - possibly due to limited number of
team follow cars, commissaires, moto refs.
Similarly, ever wonder exactly how a Tour team with
nine guys but two cars handles a point-to-point TT,
when several of them are on the course at once?
I assume some of the gregarios get neutral service
or just a following moto. The team fan clubs should
raffle off the chance for a superfan to bring his car
and do follow-car duty.
If you're talking about the Tour of France, it's not neutral - via fans, friends and misc team helpers every rider has a follow car with accreditation to be there and at least two people in it.

I suspect/suppose the three waves has been implemented to reduce the likelihood of confusion resulting from having too many competitors on the course at the one time unlike most TT courses this is a two lap affair
