Update and clarification Re: Source for nice fat 27" slicks?

Thanks to all of you who have responded. I have followed up on your various suggestions and I am getting the sense that the largest tire available in 27" is going to be a 27 x 1 1/4. I really wish I could get something closer to 26x1.6" Conti's I have on a tandem (I incorrectly linked to the 26x1.3 version in the original post). What I really want is tire that rolls nicely, turns nicely, and is fat enough to act as cushy suspension.
Soooo.... looks like if I want fat and smooth I'll need to switch out to 700c wheel set. Easy enough I guess but I wanted to keep the touring bike in original trim.
Any possibility there is a big fat smooth 27" tire out there that no one has mentioned yet? I have contacts in UK and Australia so they don't necessarily need to be available in the US.
Thanks again,
Jim
