28 Tooth Loose Cog

Jeff Starr 4 May 2005 18:56:00
Hi, does anyone know where I can get a Shimano 9-speed compatible
loose 28t cog. I have googled, I have placed a WTB in
rec.bicycle.marketplace, but so far no luck.

I want to swap out a loose 23 & 25 for 24 & 28. I am planning on
joining a club, where I won't have the option of choosing my own
routes. With one leg, my climbing skills are a bit limited. My DA
triple crankset won't let me swap out the 30t, for a smaller ring.

I really think that 30-28 should do it. I currently run a 14-25
cassette and that is why I need loose cogs. The 21, 19, 18 are on a
carrier, and the 17, 16 are rivetted together. I really like having
the 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14. With a lot of cassettes the 18 and 16 are
left out.

If someone privately has one, and would prefer, I'd be willing to
trade a 12-25 HG50 9-speed cassette, that has 550 miles on it, for the
28t & 24t.

To email me, substitute people for animal.

Thank you,
Jeff

IRD makes a loose cog 12-28, 9s cogset. The only source of a loose> cog, AFAIK.

If not that, why not buy a mtb cassette (11- or 12-28, 30, 32 or even 34)?

As for switching the 23 and 25 for 24 and 28, you could probably just> forget about switching the 23 to 24. Just switch the 25 to a 28. I> run a Campagnolo 9 speed cassette and go from 23 to 28 for the last> shift.

Same setup here with Shimano HG70 13-25 9-speed: I replaced the 25 with
a 28 for 8-speed. The five tooth jump from 23 to 28 is less smooth than
the others, but still works nicely and gives me a last resort for some
hills here.
Big cogs can often be taken from old MTB cassettes as they wear slower
than the smaller ones. Many people who ride their bike mostly in town
just use one of the middle cogs only anyway.

Bill, as far as I know, the cogs I want, are mounted to a spider on
the mtb cassettes. If that is not always the case, I might consider a
whole cassette.
I want to keep the rest of my current cassette, as mentioned. I like
the close ratios 21, 19-14.

Hi, I have read the cog info, that you listed. If you go to the sizing
chart: http://sheldonbrown.com/k7.html#spacing
The 8 & 9 are .2 millimeter different, the 7 to 9 is a difference of
.7 millimeter, so you are correct, it shouldn't matter.

I had thought that 21, 24, 28, would be an easier shift, but I like
your idea of just changing the 25 to 28. My old bike has a 6-speed
freewheel that goes from 28 to 24, to 21. The problem with
comparisons, is that bike has a double 39/52, so I can't test 30-28
combo, to see if that will be enough for any of the hills that I
encounter. I can get up them with the 30-25, but it takes a lot out of
me and man am I slow[on the hills].

I know Sheldon sells them, but I also knew that he was out of stock
until July, that is a long time to wait.

To be honest, I haven't tried any of my LBS, as I have had very little
success in the past. But it sure couldn't hurt to make a few calls.
Thanks for the info.

Pardon me for asking, but you have one leg? If so, what's that like?

sram cassette's are just held together with a long bolt. so you can take them
apart. I just mixed a 9 speed MB cassette and a road one. if you wanted a 28" I
could give it to you. I used 30 and 26 and I have a 28 I think.

XT-level and up cassettes are mounted on a spider. LX and below are not.
Look for LX and below, or check out the SRAM PG series of cassettes, easily
obtained, and cheap, too.
