I'd like to fit the rear of my bike with a disc brake but I don't have the lugs (1 year newer and I'd be fine - phooey!)
I found an adapter that claims (of course) to work well but nobody and no bike shops local to me know anything about it. I'm wondering if there's anyone here who's tried it and/or has an opinion on it, good/bad/indifferent?
Details: A2Z DM-UNI Universal Disc Brake Mount Adapter
I saw a pair on a Trek road bike at the Georgia Tech campus - that's what led me to look into them. Coming from experience with frame manufacturing, the real question is what risk are you willing to take of cracking the frame? As the other comments mentioned, it's the front brake that's bearing most of the load (and the REI Buzz has proven over the past half-dozen years that a rigid Al fork can withstand brake forces at the hub from a disc.) However, it is conceivable taht after enough stress cycles, the seat-stay/chain-stay junction on the non-drive side (where the adapter mounts) could develop hair-line fractures. The chances of real catastrophic failure would seem pretty low and would probably only happen in conjunction with a collison-induced side impact on that part of the frame. I think it's a pretty great idea, since the real benefit of discs is the basic design necessitates far less regular maintenance than rim-brake designs - all rim styles change their adjustment every time the brake is applied, and usually in a pretty drastic way as they wear. Discs just don't.
did this ever get this resloved? I just got a trek 9.8 and I was wondering if that adapter worked, I tried the other one for the paralle but there is not enough room at the chain stay and seat stay where they come together, looking for another way. thanks Rob
