STI shifters destroy cables?

Dion Dock 19 April 2005 20:16:21
My wife and I have experienced 4-5 instances of shifter cable failure in
Dura Ace 8 and 9 speed shifters. The failure is always the same, the
"anchor" in the shifter cable is ripped off, leaving an extremely frayed
cable. It happens when downshifting to a larger rear sprocket.

I've never seen anyone mention this before, but I can't believe we're the
only people who experience this problem.

thanks,
-Dion

Read my 10-minute-old post in the "STI Rear Cable Life" thread. (My
brifters are Ultegra, but same thing happened -- albeit to only ONE cable so
far.)

As mentioned elsewhere, this may be an indication of too much friction in
your cables & housing. Look for burrs on the ends of the housing,
poor-quality ferrules, housing where the outer plastic sheathing has
recessed a bit, exposing the metal underneath... grease where the cables
travel under the frame... all are potential causes of premature cable
failure.

I got about 10,000Km out of my last cable, which then started to fray as
described in this thread. I assumed that was normal, but you have just
prompted me to grease under the frame in future.
