better componants??? Shimano 105 (1987), or Shimano 600 (1984)

Guest 21 March 2005 00:59:40
I have two bikes that I'd like to build into one. One has Shimano 105
parts (rd-1050, SIS rear derailer) (1987?). The 105 parts have been
used and have some dings and dents on them, but seem to work okay. I
have another bike (frame too small for me) that has Shimano 600 parts
(1984?) (fd-6207, rd-6208, brakes-6208). These parts don't look used at
all and just need a little cleaning.

Both bikes have down tube shifters (indexed). I'd like to install bar
end shifters, which ones work with these derailers?

Which componant group is better quality?

Can I increase the speed from a 7 to and 8 or 9? if so what should I
look for in new gears?

Thanks for the help in advance.

You can use the present shifters and convert them to bar ends-

I don't have any experience with 600 stuff. The couple of 105 rear
derailleurs I've gotten on used bikes had seemed pretty worn. I'd go
with the parts with the least wear all in all, whatever series.

Thanks. That's what I was thinking. Just to clear up my first message,
I'm not interested in building a tandem bike. I can see why someone
might think I am. I just want to take the one frame that fits me and
put the best parts I have on it.

Thanks again.
