There was a good selection of purpose built cross bikes from> the big name artisan shops in the sixties. I think what's> changed is that major manufacturers offer 'em since ( as you> note) the middle 1980s. And shops actually started stocking> them - no four month wait now!
The first one I remember seeing was a Guerciotti/Alan in the late 70s, which was probably several years old. At the time it seemed pretty exotic, and for cross, extravagant. I didn't see another cross frame for several years, despite cross being fairly popular. One reason for this was you didn't need a "good" bike, which is why that Alan seemed so extravagant. Normally a garage sale special was fine, as long as it didn't have steel rims.
