One of Bernard Hinault, the year he won Roubaix. It was in a cycling
magazine, an article about how he totally hated that race. He
basically thought it was stupid and a big circus but he wanted to win.
He was WC that year. THere's one photo of him tearing along with his
muddy WC jersey and this expression of grim determination on his face;
he'll win if it kills him! Of course he won.

The photo above was from 2001. Sorenson raced professionally at least
into the following year.

For some reason, when they have that gray mud caked on they make me
think of elephants. DOes anyone get what i mean?

I also like the still photos they would show at the beginning credits
of Paris Roubaix; some guy with blood streaming down his head, from
way back when.

Never thought of that, but you'll probably see it again this year. It's
gonna be good; rather bad weather predicted for the end of the week.

Yaaay! It' s been too nice and sunny the last two years. We need a
real glop-fest.

I can't remember who it was, but i remember yet another article about
paris roubaix, and they described someone who, if it wasn't raining,
would cry. Probably a bit exaggerated, but he'd get all upset. I cant'
remember who the 'cryer' was. I think it may have been marc Madiot.

Stuart O'grady always says he loves gloppy conditions, which is kind of
funny when you think he comes from a nice, dry sunny climate. Or maybe
that's why!

We don't get many riders with that kind of expressivity anymore, just
Horner and Boogerds' stupid grins...

A bit of browsing from the homepage would have taught you: Eric (or
Erik, apparently) Vanderaerden on his way to the win in 1985.

It's definitely Eric, only the URL has Erik.

Looking at that site, I'm amazed Flemish television is not producing a
Ronde history DVD.
They used to have a VHS that went up to 1999 or so, with great footage
one.

I saw that (an English-language version) and it was pretty amazing. I
wish it had been longer though -- maybe twice as much on each race.
