15-miler

Kramer 29 April 2005 19:49:29
Okay, I have bumped my one hour ride from 13 to 15 miles. It might not seem
like much of a leap, but it is a lot more work for this newbie :) If I keep
this up, I might even buy a road bike by the end of summer (or at least some
street tires). Of course I had my first wipe-out also, but that was only
due to my stupidity....

For most beginners, I think bumping your 1 hour ride up to 2 hours is better
training than a faster 1 hour ride.

Riding 15 miles on a mountain bike is harder for me than 15 miles on a
road bike. You'll probably feel like you got a promotion when you
switch to a road bike.

FS bikes certainly do--I almost fell off my neighbor's FS bike when I took
it for a test ride, standing up made it almost "boing" me off. LOL

My old rigid mtb w/slicks aint bad at all on the road--of course I
narrowed the bars and made the gearing more street appropriate. More hand
positions would be nice, but it's done three to four hour rides with just
a little hand discomfort.

Drop bars and 700c are my preference if given a choice. ;)

Why's that?

I think it would be hard to make a judgement not knowing anything about
the rider.

congrats! during the week, I'm only able to ride for about a
1/2 hour, (about 7 miles). I wish I could ride longer, but the
family must come first. :-)

keep it up!

So Bill on your epic all day rides you are never more than a half hour
from home is that it?

That sounds *really* boring.

I don't know about that age dis. I was in my mid-40's when I got back
into riding. I worked up to 50-60 mile rides pretty quickly (couple of
months), did a century in about 6 months. If you don't have any medical
issues, this sort of progress seems pretty modest.

Now that depends on your riding style, if you need speed, you need a road
bike.
But if you just need to cruise to the local corner store, in varied
conditions such as traffic, crossing roads etc, a hardtail mtb with road
tires might be more comfortable, I know mine is.

Thats kind of funny I was thinking the same thing. 100 mile rides never more
than a half hour from home.

Well done , I know from my own experience just how rewarding achieving an
improvement is.
as for a road bike consider a Moulton (F frame ) Full suspension road bike
1960s style, can heartily recomend 100k feels like 25, resilient buckled
wheels from the smallest pot hole or dip in the road and a rear carrier to
boot.
Makes MTB look like it was hacked by a bridge builder and an A frame
somthing to be consigned to the musem!

True.
50-60 miles on pavement is no big deal except for finding someplace
interesting to go. I didn't start this as a plan but took my bike to
work so I could ride around a mountain at lunch time, 8 miles with about
a 1,000 foot climb every day. I started out slow, lost weight, gained
strength and speed and was exploring every place possible to ride after
work within about 3 months. This was on the old Huffy that got ragged on
even at work by the resident roadies, but it was better than walking to
McDonalds with the other cubicle residents.
Just do it, by whatever means you can, and it will pay off.

If you ever get bored with road riding you can try my style and take a
MTB to a park/preserve and try 20-30 miles on trails of dirt or gravel
and it will feel like a lot more.
Any exercise is good exercise.

Nothing really wrong with that. I live next to a 2300 ft, 8 mile climb> and I do this sort of thing often.>
My 6 mile rides are around some farm fields that make a 6 mile rectangle
so that is my close to home riding. I have to go at least ten miles to
get into the rolling hills and after 5 miles of up/down/repeat I get to
the actual uphill grind of only 950 feet but it too is up and down,
mostly up. Lots of trees for shade if I do want to stop and have a drink
so I can do it even when it tops 100 around here, which is normal in the
summer. From May to September I just have to commit to the fact I am
going to need a shower and carry a lot of water.

Wrong.
I might accumulate 100 miles in 6 mile segments if I need to be near
home for a possible business call but otherwise I go out to about 40
miles away, ride around there some, and then head back.
There are no fixed courses so it just depends on what is happening that day.

That Bill must ride in circles all the time explains a lot.>

Yeah we don't have any of that in Vancouver.
