I hate FA ads. I know where ebay is and I think people should respect
this site as a FS site.

Obviously that would be best but also sometimes those ads are a good pointer
to something that you might want.

than to cancel the races. Humans have no business mountain bike racing

Subject: Bear mauls teen during 24-hour bike race in Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska Anchorage police say a teenage girl taking part in
a 24-hour bike race was severely injured after a grizzly bear attack.

The girl was riding early Sunday on a park trail when attacked. She
used her cell phone to call 911 but was unable to communicate.

Another biker found the mauled girl around 1:30 a.m. and called
police.

Medics were escorted by officers with shotguns into the dark woods to
retrieve the girl.

Subject: Grand Ridge Aviary

Grandma was watching the kiddies so my wife and I hiked Grand Ridge
from the
Duthie side. As we got to the top of the first hill and went around a
noticeable log roller we spotted a large grey owl about 30' ahead in a
low
tree. It was staring us down big time which is when we heard the
hissing
noises from to our left where there was another owl. Then we heard
what
sounded like more hissing to the right so we decided to move on.

Went to the top of the second hill ( 1 hour total), returned to the
aviary
and there they were again. Only this time all three were in the same
tree
within 10' feet of each other - it was cool and they were big. Then we
saw
a fourth flying to our right. We took some bad pictures with my phone
and
moved on. But they started following us; swooping through the trees.
We
rounded a corner and heard the hissing. We spotted one directly above
us
puffing its feathers. Then the other three joined and continued the
assault.

It was one of the wildest nature encounters I've had; like an
interactive
zoo. My guess is they are guarding chicks and will be there for
awhile.
Keep your eyes open and you might catch them. It's between the first
dirt-bridge and the only real log roller; well before the bog with the
4x6
crossing, about 30min hike/20min bike. If you know/are a good
photographer,
might be a good opportunity.

Funny thing is I probably would never have noticed on my bike. Happy
Father's/Flag day!

Aero Gran Compe brake blocks Finlay Mackay 22:29:01
 Dear rbt-ers,

I have a Dia-Compe Aero Gran Compe brake on the front of my fixie:

<http://tinyurl.com/45befb>

It does the job and is ever so tiny and lovely, but I forsee a problem
down the line, when I have to replace the brake blocks. The only online
supplier I can find (I notice that the ?proprietor is a regular on this
group, so shall spare his blushes) wants $50 a pair for the blocks - more
than I paid for the complete brakeset. Can anyone with experience of these
brakes confirm whether the mounting system they use is unique, or can other
blocks be made to fit? I am prepared to forego the aero advantage of the
elliptical blocks ;)

cheers

Re: WD-40 on a rusty chain? Jobst Brandt 22:08:16
 Ron Ablang wrote:

I have a co-worker I'll call "Eric". Yesterday, I got to see his
bikes (he has 4) at his place. He has a MTB bike (main) in the
garage and 3 in the backyard. The last 3 seem to have been there
for a while exposed to the elements. They all have rusty chains and
I'm sure flat tires.

Today we got to talking about them. I told him he'll probably have
to replace the chains (or is it possible to save a rusty chain?).
He says he can WD-40 the heck out of it and it'll be as good as new.
I told him I thought it would probably work, but that WD-40s a
degreaser and it'll have to be cleaned off afterward and then lubed.
He says he's been riding bikes for years and WD-40s all he needs (he
probably sprays his whole bikes w/ it).

What do you guys think? How can you un-rust a chain? And is WD-40
not good for a bike in any way?

Rust on the outside of a chain (the only rust that is visible) has no
effect on its function. Unless the chain was washed clean of
lubricant, the link pins and their running surface are not rusty, so
you can ad a bit of motor oil while pedaling backward and be done with
it.

As you see, WD-40 is not a rust inhibitor nor a good lubricant for a
chain that is exposed to water because it washes away too easily,
being a microscopically thin layer. Forget about external rust.

 * tombates@city-net.com <tombates@city-net.com>:
The frame on my Gary Fisher cheapo mountain style bike broke even
though I never rode it off road. I probably put on thirty thousand
miles over almost five years. The bike shop is in the process of
taking care of the free replacement even though I have to pay to have
parts changed which ten years ago I would have done myself, but as I
get older I do not have the patience for such things. My question is
that the bike shop person said that the seat post on my old frame may
be a different size than on the new frame. If it is I would have to
pay for a new seat "stem." I think Gary Fisher should pay for it since
they changed sizes not me. If a part is worn out then I would agree to
pay for it, but if they standardize sizes to save on inventory costs,
why should their savings come from me.
Tom

Tom,

I just went through something similar with my Cannondale. My frame was
no longer being made so they offered me a very similar frame. I also
had them install new brakes, chain and cables. I figured, why not, they
are going to have it torn apart anyways. Now is the time. They charged
me $35 to move all the existing parts over. After it was all said and
done. I feel like my bike is brand new again.

So, maybe getting a new sized piece of tubing for $20 or so, ain't to
bad...?

Australia's "Best Mountain Biker" Is A CRIMINAL! Mike Vandeman 09:53:45
Surprize, surprize! Even IMBA once posted a study on its website
showing that the vast MAJORITY of mountain bikers don't obey the law:
http://home.pacbell.net/mjvande/mtb76. They removed it, once they
discovered the truth accidentally being told....

Mike

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/feedarticle/7614406:

Australia's best mountain biker overlookedReuters, Friday June 27 2008
SYDNEY, June 27 (Reuters) - Australia's best mountain biker Chris
Jongewaard has been overlooked for the team for the Beijing Olympics
because he is facing criminal charges.
Jongewaard is Australia's highest-ranked rider but was not considered
for the 28-member cycling squad named on Friday, with his spot going
to Daniel McConnell.
Jongewaard faces charges over a hit-and-run driving incident last year
in which fellow cyclist and training partner Matthew Rex sustained
head injuries.
Cycling Australia said they could not include Jongewaard because he
had failed to meet the Australian Olympic Committee's strict by-laws
on behaviour.
Earlier this year, butterfly specialist Nick D'Arcy was kicked off the
swimming team for Beijing after being charged over an alleged assault
in a Sydney nightclub.
"The committee believes it cannot in good faith nominate Chris
Jongewaard," Cycling Australia said in a statement.
"We acknowledge he met the performance criteria but nomination for
selection in the Australian team for the Olympic Games is based on
more than results."
Cycling Australia said Jongewaard had been notified that he had until
Tuesday to decide whether to appeal.
The squad included five track sprinters, eight track endurance riders,
eight road cyclists, five BMX riders and two mountain bikers.

Why does Ed Dolan post to multiple cycling newsgroups? Edward Dolan 08:25:06
Gentlemen, I have lurked mightily on all the varsious cycling newsgroups
(except the technical and racing ones) and have concluded that you are all a
bunch of idiots. Therefore, I have decied that as long as my posts are of a
general nature that you will benefit from my wisdom. I am just too Great to
restrict Myself to ARBR alone. Nay, I owe it to the rest of you to brighten
your otherwise dismal days with my superior intelligence.

Seriously folks, I will keep my posts to the cycling groups of a general
nature which will have universal applicability. But even when it is just
about ARBR, I think the rest of you can enjoy what is being said as I NEVER
get too narrowly focused on anything, I am the ultimate dilettante and my
only purpose in being here is to entertain and amuse you. It goes without
saying that nothing of substance ever gets said on a newsgroup. Since that
is the case, I am made to order for you.

It has often been said of me that I don't ever seem to say much, but that is
because you do not know how to read me. I will teach you in the mysterious
ways of Ed Dolan so that you will be enlightened. I always try to say
something that will not only brighten your day, but will contribute some
wisdom to your otherwise benighted lives. After all, there is more to life
than riding your confounded bikes and blathering about the perils of the
road.
