Well actually after writing the subject line, I diverted my attention>to the fact that elsewhere Strauss flopped yet again.
Strauss appears to be unable to take county cricket seriously now. I didn't see his innings today, but apparently he was going very nicely and then essayed an extravagant hook. In this morning's Guardian, Mike Selvey is of the opinion that none of the certainties in the England top order (bar Flintoff, who's keen on his recovery) are able to summon up much interest in county games; I've only actually seen Strauss, but Selvey's dead right about him at least.
With Flintoff on>the doldrums too, and Kevin Pieterson's repeated failures(BTW I don't>think he was/is in the fray), I think all those talks about English>posing serious challenges to the Aussies looks rather a blighted>supposition.> Can somebody let me know how Robert Key and Vaughan are faring(IIRC>Vaughan had a part of the season off) and how Thorpe serious is>Thorpe's injury?
Key has had a very big innings (though of course he was dropped while still in single figures), and Vaughan has had one f-c innings in which he scored 12. The man in serious form with the bat is Ian Bell.
Harmison is now getting top order wickets: in fact, he was responsible for Trescothick getting nowhere in his last match. Hoggard hasn't got any, though, since Yorkshire's Kolpakker Deon Kruis has been taking hatfuls (and Bresnan is beginning to make a serious impact, which is good news for about 2007-8). Giles appears to be in the form of his life, with 24 wickets in his first three games - although he didn't get any in 11 overs against Sussex yesterday and today.

Well he flopped today too.
So did all the other Yorkshire batsmen, apart from Ismail Dawood. I am NOT amused.
Nor was I amused by Strauss showing yet again his ability to place balls perfectly: as in the first innings, there was only one fielder in front of square on the leg side but Strauss managed to smack it straight into his hands.
At this rate, we'll be following on against the Bangles.

Speaking of which, can you confirm for me whether Ben Hutton actually has any attacking strokes?

Nah. Habitual Basher is far too smart a cookie to commit a momumental blunder such as that.

Once upon a time he did. He appears to have put them in his locker and forgotten about them, although it's possible he might get them out again if he ever remembers how to time the ball, which he has done on about four occasions this season. I was forced to ask a (rather older) friend of mine whether Ben's granddad had been this cautious, and I was assured not, even at his worst.
Cheers,

However, I forgot to mention that Hutton is indeed a wise and sagacious captain, as he declined to enforce the follow-on against Glos today.
With a lead of only 158, it's a fair decision: there's naff all in the pitch and there's a chane it could help Chandana in the fourth innnings, and though Betts took four wickets in the end, he took a right pasting in the process and could probably do with the rest. Richardson got another impressive five-fer, though. Warks are doing well enough without him, but it's still not at all clear why they let him go.
