927 days

Andrew Dunford 3 May 2005 02:18:19
Welcome to a new series of 'It Happened 927 Days Ago'. For those not
familiar with the concept, we take a Test match which commenced 927 days
ago, look at the scorecard and examine the relevance to any current topics
under discussion on this newsgroup.

Pakistan v Australia at Sharjah CA Stadium
19 - 22 October 2002

Australia 444 (128.3 overs, 582 mins)
Pakistan 221 (71.1 overs, 322 mins)
Pakistan 203 (67.2 overs, 331 overs)

Australia won by an innings and 20 runs.

Match summary: Australian won by an innings owing to a bold and unusual move
by its captain SR Waugh, who enforced the follow-on despite the possibility
that his pampered, over-paid bowlers might (and this is the controversial
bit) have to field for two days in a row.

People say stats aren't all that important, but I'm betting a chance to> score another century in a big win is no small thing.

Interesting sideline points, but nothing more than that, unless they're an
attempt at bolstering a weak argument. I'd tend to go with the 'we've been
over here long enough - let's win the match as quick as possible and get a
plane home' theory myself.

I'd actually forgotten that in this series in the second test, Pakistan>had lost by 198 runs despite Australia batting once for 310 in the>middle.

How pathetic of Waugh to not allow Pakistan to score more so his
batsmen could have another chance in the middle to score some more
runs.
