Well done on a deserved win. Far too good for SL. Played the much better
cricket in this test.

Had the best conditions in my opinion. Martin's early wickets set the scene
for a NZ victory. Still, we've had a hard time over the last year and it's
nice to finish the season off with a win.

It was indeed a good toss to win, and NZ also did well to exploit it> (as Yorkshire's bowlers signally failed to do yesterday, grump, grump).>
But SL's bowlers were similarly unable to stop NZ scoring at Napier.> I'd heard that in the absence of Murali, SL's other bowlers were> stepping up to be counted rather more these days, but this series was> not a good demonstration of that.
Malinga seems to be a good novelty turn, in that batsmen find him> difficult to play the first time they encounter his weird action but> once they've seen the trick, it's no longer very puzzling. It's the old problem afflicting sides since time immemorial. It doesn't> matter how good your batsmen are (and SL have a pretty good hand of> batsmen) if your bowlers can't take 20 wickets.

For my part, Sri Lanka's bowlers had done better than I'd expected in recent
series without Murali, which probably says that my expectations were pretty
low. Fernando did well against Pakistan, but wasn't here. Although Sri
Lanka was clearly weak at third seamer (even if arguably no weaker than NZ
in this series), the biggest disappointment was the non-Murali spin bowling
options. Herath has taken a few wickets in recent times but here looked
utterly innocuous, whilst Chandana can deliver a decent leg-spinner or two
but suffers from (a) lack of control and (b) lack of variety. I didn't see
him bowl a wrong-un.

Malinga suffers when batsmen have their eye in against him because he seldom
gets conventional swing or moves the ball off the seam. The only time he
got swing in the series was a spell reversing the old ball at Napier.
However Wellington's conditions are rather different: Napier has a warm, dry
grape-growing climate with abrasive soil which encourages the ball to become
worn, whereas Wellington's more lush outfield and pitch surrounds help keep
the ball in better condition. There was no sign of reverse swing in the
second Test.

Tell me Kiwi sages. Why do the NZ comms always support & plug Wiseman
when they should be bagging the crap out of him. He's boring and
ineffective even by Giles standards. Wiseman? Piesman if there ever was.

You need to bear in mind that the off-spinner used prior to Piesman was The
Mighty One.

Ahh.
It becomes clear.

Not to mention Loathing.

It could hardly be a fanatical devotion to the Pope.

He gives it a fair tweak and that always looks impressive if you aren't
playing close attention. To give him some credit I thought he looked better
than some of the Kiwi quicks in Aus series.

I guess the question for the Kiwis is there anyone better (Vettori
excluded)?

No, Crap is the Key. As I expect he will demonstrate during the Ashes
series if he's still in the team by then.

Cheers,

Mike
