Cuts his first ball (shortish from Rana) uppishly between the man at backward point and the man at a square cover (almost bisects them, still a little dangerous). Next ball goes for what seems to be a predetermined pull, and just spoons it up real high. Very bizarre shot selection for the second ball of one's innings.

Yes, Ravi, stand corrected, was his fourth ball (I meant to say second scoring shot).
Nothing special about the ball. Bounce is normal for 2nd over when play starts at 9am. Nothing that Sachin would not have known. Not perth like bounce or anything. Just very poor selection.

third ball.

fourth ball.
If he didn't do that, he would be accused of going for his records. Atleast in tests, he can hide behind the fact that he was playing tests. Whats his excuse in odis.

It was a predetermined mode to attack but not necessarily predetermined Pull. SRT of late with his back probs n assorted stuff, doesnt pull or dance down the track as instinctively n effectively as younger days. now he predetermines his pull, in that he would just judge/guess/anticpate mindread the bowler that this ball is going to be a shorter one, and then would go back n across (like he did to caddick) and then pull. then he can carry it off. this game, it was just a predetermined mode to attack n not accumulate, he didnt expect that ball would be the one to pull, sort of saw the lenght late and then his pre determined mode to attack, made him go for that pull shot but couldnt carry it off; if it was predetermined you can bet that he would have gone back n across, not plonk his left foot forward like he did and then try to lunge back his weight backward, which he of late cant do successfully, esp as the ball in case moved a bit (pitched off n middle n moved towards off) with bit of bounce.
It was the tale of his attacking instinct trying to carry a shot from memory; unfortunately for the great batsman, reality deals with the 'present', notpast, however glorious it may have been.
