The weather in Auckland

Aditya Basrur 28 March 2005 06:37:47
God, it sucks. Here I was, getting ready for an interesting day's Cricket.
Sun was shining outside, I'd finished an assignment, and I was about to get
in the car and drive to Eden Park to see Gilchrist smite another ton.

Then what happens? First Clarke gets out comically. Gillespie screws up, but
did his job. Katich craps. Warne gives a dolly of a chance to Fleming.
Suddenly, Gilchrist isn't looking so hot - but James Franklin is. And then,
it starts raining at Eden Park. (I was surprised - my backyard, 20 minutes
away, was completely dry. 20 minutes later, it was pouring. I understood.)

So now, what choice do I have? I guess I'm going to have to sit at home, wait
for the rain to stop, read an Ibn Battuta travelogue. I'll probably down a
couple of beers, fall asleep, and by the time I wake up, Gilchrist will have
hit another ton.

I'd go tomorrow, but have committed to a blonde girl all day. Probably lost
my last opportunity to see Warne play in NZ. Bugger, bugger, bugger. Still,
there's always the Sri Lankan series.

I hope the blonde makes up for the weather today! As for the cricket
... who knows what Warne will do next! You never know, he might be
back!

I can sympathise.

I live in Canberra, but I was able to get to the first day of the
Sydney Test back in January. That was a Sunday, and I was obliged -
against my will - to work on the Monday. it was not really worth the
expense to return to Sydney for the Tuesday, third day, even though
Gilchrist was not out overnight and I just *knew* that he would put on
another show. He did.

Well, I live in the same town, so don't have much of an excuse. It looks like
he's putting on a real show here already (7 4s in his 32), but I'm able to
catch it on the TV. Thing is, I've watched him live two or three times now,
most recently at last year's Boxing Day Test. He's never done great when I've
been at the ground. Since he is my favourite player, maybe I should stay him
in the warmth, and not jinx him ...
