Yes. All "potential" guys, these are - not Balaji, who has
overachieved and deserves no blame whatsoever, but the other
two. Karthik has not contributed runs so far at all in
internatinoal cricket - he needs one big innings at least
pretty badly, for confidence as much as anything. But its
making a *huge* difference to the side, this not-much coming
from the #7 lately. Pathan looks good with the bat, but he
really needs to step up as well - both the last 2 matches
were set up nicely for a bigger score that could have put
it away properly. Kumble should be batting higher than
both probably - he has previous performances to back him
up with the bat, and he hit genuine squarecuts yesterday,
some real shots, showing why he used to be #6 for Karnataka
for a short while in the past.

Afridi got off to the kind of start we expect and then showed why> comparisons> to Sehwag are ridiculous (even ignoring the 2 to 1 disparity in> averages) with

Not quite 2-1 - Afridi is like 33 with the bat I think, which
isnt that terrible. But yes, no comparison there, and an
unbelivably crappy test shot.

a hoick that my school coach would have had me running "rounds".

He's bowling a lot of nonsense, going at like 76 mph half
the time yesterday. They keep saying the Indian bowlers
want to bowl slowly, but thats too slow and consistently
so IMHO. Pathan's potential is obvious, but other than
against Bangles he's really not done much at test level
so far - certainly not to be compared favourably to a young
Akram (which I keep hearing all the time).

And then Younis Khan showed us why the Pakistani selectors rate him
highly. This was the first time I saw him bat, and he looked like a> star. And> what running between the wickets. Amazing stuff.>

Ive seen him plenty, and never been *that* impressed - saw his
early days too, debut-ish series IIRC. He's decent, never
thought he was *that* much more - to me the only 2 really
classy plyaers in the Pakistan side have always been Inzi
and Youhana. That said, Younis batted better yesterday than
Ive ever seen him before - they bowled badly, but he batted
very very well (ran excellently, but he always runs
excellently anyway). I thought Youhana was better, but then
I always do I think.

And Youhana too showed his critics that he too can make runs when it> counts. Both batsmen batted beautifully to score super tons, and any> of> three Youhana cover drives being candidates for shot of the day (OK,

Ganguly's captaincy was strange. He overbowled Pathan when he
clearly> wasn't doing well -- and strangely ignored Bhajji for a

Mostly agree with above, but not entirely. Pathan was very
poor mostly - even the first spell where he got the wicket
thru Afridi's stupidity. Balaji had a nice first spell when
eh kept getting Taufiq dropped (though the ball that got
Taufiq out should never get an Asian batsman out anyway),
but wasnt nearly as good later.

The Kumble/Bhajji thing above - think youre a little generous
on Kumble. I thought Kumble bowled very well in short stretches,
I actually think before tea rather than after - his first few
overs he kept having LBW appeals (one was a very good one,
a couple not bad, the rest only Kumble was appealing, not
sure why). But late i the day Kumble bowled quite poorly
I thought - he kept dropping a bit too short, and this pitch
is too slow for that, Younis was enjoying it with pulls
and cuts etc. It was a strange drop-off after a good start
I thought - but maybe he just got tired (he bowled 50+ overs
in the 2nd innings at Mohali too a few days ago, and he was
good on the 4th afternoon there and completely horribly on
the 5th day there).

Bhajji - I thought he was badly treated. He has been out of
international cricket for a bit, will take a little while to
get the feel maybe. His first spell of 6 overs wasnt great,
but he had a couple of inside-edges etc - not awful. I thought
they should continue with a double-spin for a long time right
then, but they moved Bhajji off - bad choice IMHO. Went with
Pathan before tea. Then Pathan again after tea. Then Balaji
after that. And all that time Bhajji was just being ignored -
it was totally unbelievable IMHO. When Bhajji came back he
was IMHO immediately the most-likely-to-get-a-wicket guy
for the next few overs - both batsmen were totally set by
then and only 2 close-in guys were given, but he still looked
likelier than anyone else for a stretch. Should have come on
much earlier, and bowled a lot more IMHO. (And, BTW, when
you have them at 75/2 chasing 400, why *not* have 3 close-in
fielders all the time, at the very least? What is this with
slip, fsl, but no silly-point, half the time? Id even go with
4 at that stage, witht he spinners looking good at the start
and the batsmen not set yet. For Youhana they kept moving
the field furhter out, which was very irritating -and irritating
for like 3 hours, too).

and then ignored Kumble to the end... And certainly SRT or Sehwag> could> have been given a shot. Tendulkar especially could have got quite

India could well regret letting Pak off the mat after dominating> through D4> at Mohali. Right now, Pak is much more favored, but all is not. Was looking for a nice-sized lead early on myself - I thought
the pitch would turn even more than it did. Horrible bowling
and good batting and now who knows. I think this pitch could
get much worse - it is 95 degrees too after all, it must be
baking and cracking. If that happens and we concede a lead,
I dont know. Its a Big-Mo thing - this shouldnt have been
a series at all, it should ahve been like 2-0 minimum, Mohali
was in the bag, then on this pitch this one was in the bag
with it 278/2... and suddenly if youre facing a deficit if you
have a bad session or two on D3/D4, I have a feeling that
bad session will inevitably come. WHen you should be cruising
and you suddnely findly yourself under pressure, the pressure
is worse, the MO is the other way, and I fear a fold.

Iam v irritated because I really expected much better yesterday -
even when it wasnt looking good at tea, I was very confidently
expecting some "Evening Eden Magic", saying how Inida collapsed
the previous evening, Harby took his hat-trick in the evening,
Austrlaia lost 7 in the evening to lose in 2001 here etc etc.
And then they dont take a single bloody wicket that entire
extended session. Awful. Like Mohali all over again.

But the day belonged to the two Y's. Both maligned by their
countrymen> and showing today that under tough tough conditions they could score> wonderful tons to set their team up for a win...>
We'd better do well first thing tmorrow, or a long hard 3 days of
toil> beckons..>

If they take a big lead, with the pitch going the way I think
it might, I really wonder how we'll bat out D5 ro whatever.
Afridi with his bowling speed is like Kumble, if the pitch
gets uneven he'll be a handful (plus he has the advantage
of bowling even quicker cos he's allowed to chuck).

This bowling attack was never good, but its really been
exposed a bit the last couple of days IMHO. The awful
performance at Mohali when they couldnt winkle out the last
few guys in a day, almost; and then here when they have
"only" 400 to bowl at. Anyone can bowl with 600 on the
board, if you struggle to do it with 400 on the board then
there's a problem. The batting "blew it" by our standards,
but really 400 on this track isnt a bad score by any
means.

Hopefully it'll jag around a little this morning - but even
so they'll have to bowl much better. Inzi cant bat next,
can he? After being out for so long having eaten too much
mishti-doi? I thought that might help us out a bit, it will
have to this morning.

Sadiq [ better attack a bit today at least ] Yusuf
